I guess I should have worded my question better. I know my rear end ratio is a 422 to 1 but, trying to find a Master 85 for a 1939 isn't easy. I obtained a overdrive tranny from a 1957 Chevy and I'm trying to convert to a open driveline for better highway driving. My question is what's your opinon as to using a three speed or the overdrive tranny and what rear end axle assy. would be best?

Not as easy as it sounds. Been there, done that. All the Borg-Warner Overdrives are 0.7 : 1 ratio. Look at web site < http://la.znet.com/~c1937/RPM.htm > for details. (1) If you go to hotchkiss drive from torque tube, remember to re-arch rear springs to handle the torque. You'll have to change bell housing and motor mounts. Since you have to change rear end, you could get a higher ratio and a 39 Pontiac trans. (2) The gears from the 57 3 speed will fit in your 39 case except for the OD unit. (3) The easiest way is splice the OD into your torque tube. . Caution!! Be sure to wire up the solenoid correctly. If it works and you burn it up, it's the last one in existance. Be sure you know how to operate the OD unit once installed. When to and not to use the clutch. Good Luck!
