Is is not # 3835913? This is supposed to be a 1955-56 235 head but I have records of it being fitted from 1954-7. There will be a casting date code on the face of the head, possibly under the valve cover. Thye date code will be:

A TO L for Jan to Dec THEN
1 TO 31 for 1st to 31st of that month THEN
0 TO 9 for say 1940-1949 and 1950-1959

So A316 = January 31st 1946 or 1956 and so you then need the casting number to work out which decade it was!

There may also be a casting 'CON1' or similar, which means 'CONVEYOR 1' or whatever, to indicate which batch it was in if there is a defect found.

If the number is 3835913 it is a 1954-1955 head.In 1956 the hole for the temperature sender was made larger and this required a new casting number and part number. After 1956 if you required a new head for 1954-1955 they sold you a 1956 head and a bushing/fitting to reduce the hole size.

Thanks guys for all the good info. I'll have to go and recheck the numbers again and those other casting number/date code that was suggested. I'll be estatic if it's usable on a 54 as that's what I have in my panel. Let you know what I find in a couple of days..

Thanks
Craig
