Where can I find pictures of frame side supports (for receiving side engine mounts) used on 1940-1948 passenger cars? Am I correct in understanding there are two different types?

41Guy,
The supports (brackets) that bolt to the bell housing are the same, 1937-48 except there is a right and a left.

The book, however, lists the rectangular ones for the convertible 1935-48 and the "W" shaped ones for the others, i.e., 1935-48.

Part numbers from 29-57 book:

Bracket: 594911 L and 594912 R

Cushion: (W type) 756056 L and 756057 R

(Rectangular) 377928 There is no L and R)

I think Steele sells both types as well as do Cof40s and FS. Beware of the rectangular type if they are old. They tend to pull apart relatively easy.

Note: I think both types will fit a 41 so I don't have a clue why the convertible is listed as having a different type. Maybe someone can enlighten me/us.

Good luck,
Charlie computer

Hi Charlie

Thanks for the info; it clears up alot of confusion. I'm hoping that you or others can further clarify the following or show where I'm missing the boat.

I have both a 48 and a 41 cars (non convertible). Both engines appear to be original for respective years. I do not understand why book says "1948 brackets." To me, the mounting brackets appear indistinguishable -- the brackets on bellhousings are identical, as are brackets on frames. Why does book reference 48 brackets? Is book referring to brackets on bellhousing or brackets on frame?

Regarding L and R versions for W (M) shaped mount, notwithstanding different part numbers for L and R, I think they are the same. There are two holes in the part that bolts to bellhousing bracket and two holes in the part that bolts to frame bracket. I think one set of holes is used when installed on R side and the other set of holes is used when installed on L side. What am I missing here?

Before posting this thread I searched for previous discussion of this topic but found nothing. Do you have a link to it?

Thanks again,
Guy

I have used both the original square mount and the Z mount on mt "39 - they interchange perfectly.

The original "W", "Z" or "M" (pick one) cushions didn't have two holes. Hence a left and a right. The aftermarket or later ones had two holes so they would fit either side. My 29-57 book only listed the original, i.e., the single hole ones. dance

I have Z type mounts that have two holes on one of the mounting tabs. They are after market but otherwise look just like the originals. They will then fit either side.

Thanks Charlie & Gene.

And now, please help with the final pieces of the puzzle.

Old Online Chevy Manuals 1929-1954 Parts Catalog Group 0.029 indicates there are two different styles of frame brackets for cars 40-48, which I shall call Style A and Style B, namely:

Frame Bracket Style A: 594911(L) & 594912 (R) for 37-48; and
Frame Bracket Style B: 3686007 (L) & 3686008 (R) for 40-48 (exc. Conv.)

Further adding confusion is my 1929-1948 Master Parts Catalog which in Group 0.027 shows the following part numbers for frame bracket style B: 3653243 (L) & 3653244 (R). (N.B. This catalog has no separate Group 0.029.)

Style A is for all cars 37-48, presumably including convertibles; and Style B is for all cars 40-48, excluding convertibles.

1. Why are there two styles of frame brackets for 40-48 non-convertibles?
2. Why do cars 37-39 not have two different styles of frame brackets?
3. Where would a photo or drawing of these two styles of frame brackets be found?
4. Are all bellhousing brackets the same for all cars 40-48, including convertibles?
5. Could it be that 594911 & 594912 are bellhousing brackets, not frame brackets?
6. Is convertible different due to it having a different frame?

Guy
