Passenger side door floor pan on the side pan is here my plate is located. You will have to pull back the floor liner to access the plate as it is rivited on. Should be the same for the convertible. stressed dance

If you're trying to verify the title "VIN" number of the car, be aware than many states used the engine number for that purpose through the mid '50s. If that is the case on your car the unit serial number on the data plate won't match your title.

1941-42 did not have a VIN #. The serial # was located on the data plate on the floor on the right side of the car.

Found it on the 40 and the 41, but not there on the 42. Was 42 supposed to be in the same place?
Instead of working on old cars they got me cking VINs against the master list. So far I have found 13 VINs here of by one digit. Need to see if the titles are also off or if we need a new typist in the office.

VIN number is the term used by most people and even some states to refer to all vehicle serial numbers. To be completely correct the VIN number is a Federally mandated number containing 17 characters (numbers and letters). VIN numbers started in 1981. Altering a VIN is a Federal offense.

Any vehicle number prior to 1981 was a vehicle or car or truck "serial" number. Those numbers were placed on a given vehicle by the manufacturer using their own system or code(s).

Thanks for the help, still haven't located the 42 "serial" number. Can't find it on a 28 tourer either. Assume it should be tacked to the seat base on the passenger side.

The '42 had it in the same place. In 1946 it was moved to the right front door hinge pillar.

Should be on the seat riser but may be on the passenger side main sill or even on the drivers side sill as repairs or restoration may have caused it to move or be lost.

Under the hood on the firewall on Canadian cars, which also quote the engine number, trim, paint and body serial number!
