Well, we picked up the car last night and drove home with a freshly rebuilt engine. A real treat after the long wait. During the trip home we turned the wiper on and it moved to one side and stopped. We then turned it off and it moved to the other side and stopped. We did this several times before giving up. What could be the problem?

Has the wiper been rebuilt? If not, it needs at least lubrication. You may get away with just removing the cover and lubing the reversing mechanism.

Check your vacuumn hose for cracks. Check your vacuumn connection at the wiper and also at the motor. Using a vaccumn gauge check the amount of vaccumn at idle at the motor.

Other than that the wiper unit may have a faulty diaphram inside or something else wrong with it.

I was talking to ROB FICKEN in babylon NY a few weeks ago about a roadster wiper for my 34 chevrolet. Anyway he specialises in the GM trico type wipers and has taken over the business from his father David who ran it for many many years.
you can email contact him at sales at wiperman dot com ,
might take a few days to get an answer

Thanks for the tips. I will give them a try in the morning. Yes, before we purchased the car, it had sat in a warehouse covered up for years.
