I'm tearing down a '55 235 for a rebuild. I've got the front of the motor tore down to the front motor mount plate. There are a few bolts, and three flat head screws that align and hold this plate in place. The flat head screws are 'staked.' Is this normal? It's not the first time this one has been rebuilt, found a tag on it from "Golden Eagle." Can I use locktite on these when I re-assemble it? These are not going to be easy to remove. I want to remove this to clean the block. I can't find any info in shop manual or Motor's. All any suggestions are welcome....
Thanks...

The factory staked te slotted screws and they will remove more easily than you think. Loctite will be OK also.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate the response....yeah, I got them out. When it goes back together, I'm thinking about using a flat head screw w/ allen head....

Educate me here. What does "staked" mean? Does it mean that one edge is bent down? What? Charlie

Staked means that a punch or similar tool was used to upset (dent) the edge of the fastener (or other part) so it does not move. Another example is the plate on earlier water pumps. They are staked to hold them in place.

It's also used by Cop's..."we got his house STAKED out" Or for torture..."the Indians STAKED him out on a Ant Hill"
I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED

Or poker..as in I was staked by a railbird. Or the staked plains..the most miserable part of Texas. blue38 I resemble that statement, which implies that there are other parts of Texas that are miserable, almost as miserable as most of Okiehoma! which lingers just to the East and North of 'The Staked plains"! Now you know some more , Charlie! "I was borned in Okiehoma, but my Pappy brought me to Texas, to git a good edge-e-kashion before I was completly Okieized!"
