I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any pointers on replacing the gas tank sending unit in my '65 Impala Convertible. I notice the unit is located on the front end of the tank. Do I need to remove the tank? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have never done a 65, however I have done the 61s and 64s. If you are careful and do not force anything it can be done in the car. Worse case scenario is that you may have to loosen the tank straps.

Have done a '62, '64 Impala and a '65 Malibu...all the same. Did not have to loosen the tank at all...came right out with no problem. Just jacked the car up to get working room.

I'd get under it and take a look. Use a small screwdriver to clean the dirt and grime away from the lock ring. Then use your favorite penetrating oil and start soaking it all around the lock ring. Then take a punch or chisel and gently tap on the flat tabs on the lock ring and see if it will move. Work all around the ring, it should have a few tabs to use. You don't want to start bending the ring out of round. Good Luck Don

The tricky part of replacing the gauge by NOT dropping the tank is the installation of the locking ring. You must be very careful and insure you catch all the prongs on the ring and have driven it to the stop position.

Just another tip...Use a brass drift or rod to tap the tabs on the locking ring. You don't want to use anything that can cause a spark, especially when the rubber hose is disconnected and there are fumes present.

One other thing, If you have the time to wait for it, you can order a lock ring tool on line that makes life a lot easier. They aren't expensive ($10.00 - $15.00)if I remember correctly.

Hey guys, just want to give you an update. I tackled the job yesterday morning and everything went without a hitch. I didn't have to lower or take off the tank, but I did have to jack the car up a little so I could fit underneath. The lock ring came off by using a screwdriver and hammer and the unit slid right out of the front. The tank was empty enough (gauge showed just under 1/2 tank when I was done) so I didn't have to drain any gas out. Tapped the new lock ring in place, put a few connectors on the wires, plugged them in and I was done. Thanks for all the suggestions and I'm glad it went as well as it did. cool
