My vehicle is a 1952 4dr deluxe, It has a '54 235 transplant with the original powerglide. It had been converted to 12 Vt before I got it. Had a prob this past Saturday. Car started and drove fine. Had two occasions to start and drive, then parked for 4 hours. When I whet to start the car it would not turn over. Battery is fine and full charge, ignition switch operates fine in on position, when I press the starter button the dome light flickers slightly and the headlights do not dim. There is not even the slightest hint of turn over. Was fine then nothing.

That is the quick of it. Before I start pulling the starter and solenoid is there any thing else I should look at first? (being older I don't want to get under the car more than I have to :) )

Thanks in advance

Check the battery cables and conections and wires on the solenoid then remove the starter....I would bet on the starter.

Thanks for the advice, I can get to the first three this weekend, the latter next week. Hopefully one of the first three.

Never had this happen before. Does a starter go that fast? Work one start then not the next and become history? What is in the starter that would cause it to do that? (I'm in a learning mode on this one)

Thanks

If it "clicks" but does not turn over, it is the starter. Possibly brushes. If there is no "click", it's the solinoid.

If its the brushes give the starter (case) a rap with a hammer and the try it again.

On 3 occasions over the years I have had a problem with a loose positive cable. Hit the start button and hear a light popping noise no juice to the starter. The problem was an arc between the post and the cable blocking the flow to the starter. talk

A starter can have a dead spot.

At the right point of armature position, it will be dead. This is caused by a brush continunity problem or an open in the armature itself. New brushes are cheap. Armatures are not.

And the winner is .......... the starter. Had to have it rebuilt. Solenoid was good, Thanks for all the help.
