I realize that I need to do one of two things. (1) Drill two holes in the plate below the timing chain cover. (2) Change cover by removing harmonic balancer, timing cover, remove or back off lifter assembly, remove pushrods, lifters, and then remove cam & gear to get to plate. Then reassemble. Does anyone have a spare plate from a 216 if I decide to do this? Is there a pattern to use if a person wants to drill the holes? I would think that they would have to be right on. Thanks, Donn

Don, Thanks for your help, but those holes are the ones in the middle @ 3" apart. I need the ones for the motor mounts.

You will need to drill the holes using the 1951 plate for a sample. The 1951 plate will not work with a 1954 camshaft as the higher lobes on the camshaft will not pass through the smaller hole in the 1951 plate.

I believe I will just drill the two holes. I doesn't make much sense to disasemble 2 engines, then reassemble one just for that plate. If I were rebuilding one it might be different. Thanks, Donn

While its apart, if the engine looks dirty inside this is what I would do. Remove the pan and clean the screen, remove the cover and remove the front plate and clean out the oil passage behind it and replace the timing gear and front cover seal. It will never be more easy to get at.
