Should the vacuum advance be connected or disconnected when setting the timing on a 235? The Chevy factory repair maunual is silent on this, so would assume it stays attached. However, I've read a couple comments from other chat rooms where guys have said to disconnect the vacuum advance (like I would typically do on an old small block V-8).

On a 235 or 216 it should not make any difference. The engine will run better if the vacuum line isn't leaking

It is not necessary to disconnect the vacuum line on a 6 cylinder - if the engine is at a slow idle speed. The vacuum ports in the throat of the carburetor are above the throttle plate at idle speed and do not revieve vacuum.
