Guys,
What kind of fasteners are used to bolt the fenders to the splash aprons and running boards. Also there are 6 fasteners
(besides the 2 bumper mounting bolts) that secure the gas tank apron to the rear frame cross member. What type/size are these fasteners. Thanks.

I believe that the types and sizes of the fasteners used for the fenders and for the gas tank apron are listed in the 1929-32 parts book.

The fasteners depend on if the car has rear spare tire carrier or side mount spares. Also if it has a trunk rack or not. As the dog suggested fasteners are listed in the parts book. There are several types used.

Skippy, I checked the 1929-32 parts book and I see 1/4"-20 bolts listed under fenders, splash aprons, and running boards. However, they way they are listed makes it appear these bolts are only used on certain models. My inclination is that they were used on all models and I will go with that. Now the real puzzler is the rear splash apron. First to answer Chipper's question, this car has side mounts and will have a luggage rack. Again in the 1929-32 parts book, two bolts are listed under the rear splash apron. One is 1/4"-20 and the other is 3/8". The 1/4"-20 can't be the bolt I am looking for and the 3/8" doesn't seem right either. The holes with captive nuts in the rear cross member are more like 7/16" in diameter. Any thoughts? Maybe someone with a 31 car can check what they have and respond to this post. Thanks. Frank

The trunk rack is held on by hex bolts and lock washers that fit the captive nuts in the top of the gas tank apron. There are two larger (I will need to measure them with a tap) round head slotted screws that go into the two holes in the center of the horizontal part of the gas tank apron. Those screws differ from '32 which have cross slots (no not phillips) instead of a single slot. The sides of the gas tank apron are 1/4"-20 stove bolts.

My parts book list them as
Bolt, rear crossmember cover to rear crossmember (pass, car series AE) part no 362579
Shake proof lock washer 3/8" prt no 115549
Shim, rear crossmember cover part no 355350.

I just checked my chassis and they (6 off them) are all 3/8' 24 tpi UNF , and i believe they are also supposed to be round head slotted bolts.

Jack,
Thanks for the verification of the bolts used with the trunk rack. As I wrote earlier the fasteners used depend on if trunk rack, side mount fenders or rear spare. Your posts support that with data from a parts book.

This is the information that is contained in the parts books and one of several reasons to have a parts book handy when restoring or repairing your old Chevy. Most people don't think of checking the parts book to find out what fasteners were used.

Absolutely....and the Chevrolet parts book also contains a lot of other valuable information as well such as interchangeability of parts, illustrations of parts and etc.

If you have trouble finding the nuts and bolts for the splash aprons try to locate a industrial grade metal shelving unit supplier in your area. They will have 1/4 20 zinc single slot x 1/2 or x 5/8 with square nuts. They come in boxes of 100 count.

I have a related question; Are the hex heads that fasten the rear tire carrier chrome, stainless, or painted black?

Would you believe black? Yup, Black. Nearly every fastener was either cadmium plated or black. A few were nickel or chrome plated if they showed and particularly if they held some part that was also plated.

Yes, have to agree with Chipper, the ones i have listed were all plain black, some of the front fender irons and wheel well bolts are listed as Cadmium plated.
