Does anyone out there know how many 1965 Malibu SS's were made with a 3 speed on the column, if at all? I own a '65 Sport coupe and an old guy came in to see if I wanted to buy his '65 SS. He is the original owner and stated that it has a 3spd on the column and that it is an SS car, Midnight Orchid, original 283". I'm new to '65 Malibu's, so wasn't sure if you could get an SS with a 3spd. on the column? Bobalouie

There was a Malibu 6 cylinder with the Super Sport option, a base 283, or 4 barrel 283, a 250 HP or 300 HP or 350
327 engine. All were available with a 3 speed or Power Glide and a 4 speed with the larger engines. The Super Sport was only an option for 2 door hardtops and convertibles and had nothing to do with the engine or transmision.
The SS option should not be confused with the SS396 of which there were only a limited number made.

Thanks Chevgene! If they came with the 3spd. on the column and were the SS model with buckets, did they still have center console?

Looking at the 1965 Dealer Albumn
All SS had a console. The PG and 4 Sp. had the floor shift.
The 3 speed was column and the 6 Cyl and 283 were available with overdrive also.
The 3 Speed was standard for all engines.

I believe the SS column shift cars had a block-off plate on the console.

Bobalouie ,

Please don't get upset with me but I've been stewing for months about "midnight orchid." I knew that wasn't exactly right. But couldn't think of it til this very moment.

Evening Orchid....

A pal of mine has a 65 Impala SS, 283, PG in Evening Orchid with a white interior. Pretty car....

Hi Bill, just saw the owner yesterday. He is the original owner, it is Midnight Orchid. He is not in good health, and bought the car new for his wife. It came with a console and 3spd. on the column. She couldn't drive a stick, so the Chevy dealer put an automatic in it, with the console selector, but left the linkage on the column as is. He says it has some rust, and the motor was rebuilt. It has been kept in his garage, using it to store "a bunch of junk". He's supposed to get back to me with a time to come over and take a look. He doesn't want it, but is not in a hurry to do anything, either.
It is a true one-owner, Midnight Orchid SS. So...we'll have to see...

Hi Bob,

Sorry to be slow in responding. I've been down in CA for a big woodie "show" in Santa Cruz. Good to hear you saw the owner and got some more info about the 65 SS. It sounds like it might be quite a car. Good luck in your pursuit....

Bob,

Just noticed this second page.

Yes, "Evening Orchid" is better.

I didn't want to make a fuss about it; but thought you might want to know the exact name for the color.....

Bill.
