Hi I just received my compete system from Chev's of the 40's auto and found that complete means only the pipes, muffler and a few clamps. I found my old flange but am in need of supports for the muffler and the rear end. but I can not seem to find any at this time. I am looking for help in finding detailed photos and or parts needed that I can buy. I want the system to look like it came from the factory { as close as I can }
also a note about a NAPA part I found for the sway bar I brought a set # 18060 they are the for the 1950 and up Chevys but it is the same kit that is on the 41-50 the only thing is the bolt is a little larger in diameter{ 5/16 i think } but fits great they were only 11.10 dollars yay

The front sway bar link kits are the same from 1939-54.All used a 5/16" bolt.That diameter bolt was used right up thru 1964 but different lengths were required.
Do not make the mistake that I see so often.The threaded end of the bolt is on top.If on the bottom the bolt end extends down too far and looks out of place and incorrect.
I will send you pictures of the exhaust hangers.

Just read your recent reply in Carter W-!-note that the hangers and insulators are all pictured in the exhaust section of the parts book........Is the bracket that is riveted to the frame side rail behind the muffler still there?Its about a foot long.
What year parts book do you have?The later ones have more detailed individual pictures.

When you said that you purchased an exhaust system from chevs of the 40's, you mentioned a muffler. Is it a stock muffler with stock baffling characteristics? Or is it a look alike that has its own interior design. The only reason I ask is that California bills dyno test of the stock muffler was found to rob the motor of 22 hp...Food for thought.

A 22 horse power difference is not out of the realm of possibility.
I know of 1 engine fitted with factory exhaust gained 50 hp after several exhaust adjustments.

I was told by Chevy's of the 40's that this is the proper system for this car if am going to show the car. I do have the NAPA # 18144 for the Muffler this sticker was on the NAPA box sent with the order. I do have the bracket that comes off the frame and I also have a new rubber type insulator I picked up on e-bay a while ago that was listed a 41-48 muffler insulator. The parts book I have is a master parts catalog dated April 1950. I looked over the notes and photos but the illustrations were not the best. I will check my service manual also

The 1947 216 factory figures for horsepower-
Gross horsepower 90-this was with open exhaust system,no fan,generator or water pump.Timing set at optimum setting.

The net H.P was 83.This was with the engine in the vehicle with all driven units connected and timing at normal factory settings.

But, the good news is...
83hp is still better than the actual output of the famous 100hp flathead Ford. :grin: and laid the 217 Plymouth 102hp to its final resting place, that tested out at 72hp sick. Oddly enough the 236 Dodge engine, which was also rated at 102hp, only put out 83hp when dyno'd flush. I guess we all know that the engine described so often as the "Hoary old stovebolt from the 30's" was able to hold its own dance

I still have had no luck getting the exhaust system finished in my car :( so far all the research I have done in my parts books and repair manual none show the complete system with a good layout that one could use to replace a system that was missing from the car. I am going to try the Chevy's of the 40's again as I am a little disappointed in them when I ordered the system I was informed I would have everything needed from flange to tail pipe. curse IF ANYONE HAS A 41 CAR WITH AN ORIGINAL EXHAUST SYSTEM CAN YOU PLEASE TAKE PHOTOS OF THE HANGERS AND IF POSSIBLE ON THE REAR HANGER I NEED TO KNOW THE TOTAL LENGTH OF THE HANGER AS I KNOW WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE BUT CAN NOT FIND ONE ALSO IS THERE A BUSHING IN THE RUBBER INSULATOR ON THE REAR HANGER auto I can supply photos of what I have on the chassis if this will help any one with what I am looking for.
