John, it's possible you will send me packing but I couldn't see where to log into the '61/62 chat. List @ bottom of your post states that you own a '62. Have always considered 1962 the first year for the Super Sports (SS) package. However 1961 Impala SS are advertised from time to time. Could a SS trim package be ordered for model year 1961, and was that the first year? Your help is appreciated

I can answer for John if he doesn't mind. The Super Sport option became available in January of '61 and only 453 of them were built. Along with the SS option, other required options were: 348/305hp, 348/340hp. 348/350hp or 409/360hp, 4-spd transmission (except for the 305hp), padded dash, P/S, P/B, Metallic brakes and tachometer. They came with new 1" white wall tires with black painted wheels.

Follow up question: It has been reported that in certain subsequent years, SS was a trim option that could be ordered on a 230 or 250 c.i. 6-banger with 3-on-the-tree gear selection. In what year did SS no longer (necessarily) denote a muscle car?

Starting with the '62 model year, the SS option no longer denoted a "muscle" package because it could be ordered with a 6cyl and/or automatic transmission. In later years, the muscle label could be applied again with such cars as an SS396 or SS427.

Thank you, no wonder I was confused (happens frequently)

Follow-up question: what comprised the SS package on an Impala wagon for 1962? Front bucket seats? Other trim?

The Super Sport option #240 was available on models 17-1847-1867 which is 6 or 8 Cyl. hardtops and convertibles.

Scroll to page GENERAL 8, then look at S.S. option, # 240, for listing of equipment.
