Hello All, I am rebuilding a 1958 - 235 motor for my chevy pickup & I cannot find the seal for the rear main; felpro # 13363 & I have been told that it has been discontinued; It is the orange rubber seal that goes behind the rope seal. Can anyone tell if I really need this seal in addition to the regular rope seal? I'm concerned about leaving it out & creating an oil leak. Thanks for your help. olgzr

The rubber seal replaces the rope seal. You do not need both and there is room for only one.
If it were mine I would do everything possible to find a rubber seal.
Look for an SKF 199.....Rock Auto Parts amy have it.
Also available in two other brands.

Thx for your reply chev gene; In my motor there are two groves, the larger one for the rope seal ( 3/8) wide & one behind it (1/4") for the smaller orange one. If you say I don't need both of them I will assemble w/just the rope seal; However I will search for the one that you said to look for.

"the one behind" is a return opening for oil that gets by the rope seal. It MUST be left open.
Amazon has the rubber seal under SKF #14939 for less than $11.
Also if you do a Bing search of SKF 199 or 14939 you will find many vendors.

To be sure check with a local SKF or National seal and bearing vendor.

Hello, I'm replacing the rings on my 235 chevy engine & my question is which is the compression ring & which is the oil ring? Does the compression ring go in top groove & oil ring in second groove? thanks, olgzr

The piston has three ring groves. The top two groves are for the compression rings. The bottom is for the oil ring.
Some replacemet rings have the middle ring in two or moe pieces and it is a combination compression and oil control ring. Best is to read the instructions that come with the rings as there is a top and bottom side of the rings. Also clean th carbon out of the ring groves and drill the carbon out of the oil return holes behing the bottom oil ring grove.
