Here's some interesting photo's I pulled off of the Canadian Pontiac site. They have a thread for photos of any make...it's at 19 pages long! I've picked some of the Chevrolets. Please feel free to post your black and whites as well...Chevrolets only! Lets see how long we can enjoy this thread!

First is a group of 1941 coupes bought by the Ontario Provincial Police, as their first squad cars. Taken at the Prince's Gates at the Canadian National Exibition site in Toronto.

Next is a bunch of factory fresh 1949's being loaded for delivery. I thought the transport looked cool!

Thanks for the photos. All were interesting.

I'm not surprised that the Ontario Provincial Police chose the 41 coupes for patrol cars. Shows they had really studiously compared all the makes available and chose wisely.

I am sure their choice was not based on price alone but engineering and quality. Style and ride too. There was no need for a patrolman to have to ride around in something he was embarrassed and ashamed to be driving. It may have only made for a bad attitude and, possibly, more citations issued. I could go on and on but... well, you know.

I certainly don't mean to butter up to Charlie; but that photo of all those 41's does look pretty neat. The old transporters look cool also. Thanks to Brewster for posting. I'd post some if I had any idea how.....

Geez Brewster, I could have gone all week without seeing that photo of
the crunched 50 and the 60 Pontiac against the pole!

On the other hand, I like the second photo much better. Nice looking
assortment of "used" 54-57's on the side of the building! Cute pedal
car in the window too!!!

As for the offer of a lesson, well.....

I researched the accident. I found the following article:

The City of Angels, California. 1962

Yesterday there was an automobile accident at the corner of Hollywood and Vine right here in the city. Yep. It seems that a 1960 Pontiac (nothing special), driven by a movie nutcase, ran a stoplight and colided with a lovely 1950 Chevrolet whose driver clearly had the right of way. Witnesses said the Chevrolet had the green light and was just mozing along when out of nowhere came the Pontiac smacking into it.

The driver of the Chevrolet was shaken up a little but soon claimed his senses. He complained that his pristine car would need a extensive cosmetic repairs and a new upper (steering) control arm replacement. He was wiping tears.

The Pontiac was a total wreck. (What would one expect when one tangles with a Chevrolet?) Its driver was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. It's marvelous what modern medicine can do.

The driver of the Pontiac told the police he was a farmer from eastern Tennessee and was doing the "spot the Hollywood movie star" routine. He said that he was distracted when he thought he saw Eva Gabor and "Arnold" a-strolling on the sidewalk and thus had a involuntary reflex and instead of stepping on the brake he stepped on the gas. The officer said that that was understandable. He said he had seen seen several episodes of "Green Acres" himself and liked that pig, too. He issued the Pontiac driver a citation anyway.

Charlie

BTW: There was no byline.

You're right, 32 Confederate! It's hard to see the hood sides in the picture, but now I see the grille and cowl area are different. So I guess it's a 1913,'14 or early '15 Series L Light Six? The curve in the front fenders says it's not the H series.

A quote from a Buick blog from Flint..."The old Imperial Wheel Company became Buick's service department in 1916. Chevrolet built cars here between 1912-1914. In 1915 the Monroe Motor Company used the building , it was demolished in 1938. Then Buick built their new Service and Parts building #84 on this site. It would become the engineering building for Buick in 1947."

Note that the 1950 is a Deluxe model. The cops always bought the strippers. I wonder if its because it was a Power Glide which would have been a better suited for high speed work.
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 10/08/10 02:04 AM
I did notice that they sprung for the Deluxe model, and also wondered who painted it. Were they two toned in the factory, or did the station have to farm out the job? I'm in a really 1950 sort of mood recently (more on that later ...) so here's another '50 convert in a dealership in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]
Posted By: Chev Nut Re: old photo corner... - 10/08/10 02:43 AM
Most police cars were solid black back then. Some painted the top or the doors white. That one looks to be black with the white roof.
In Wisconsin the state highway patrol cars were a light gray in the 1950's. They more or less used what ever light gray the manufactorer offered and all were not exactly the same.

The '50 convertible looks rather blah with no white walls. As I remeber every convertible we sold back then had whites. Convertibles were not too popular in this area. I would say in 1950 we probably sold 10 convertibles of the 1000 or so new cars we delivered. By 1953 this percentage picked up condiderably and by 1955 was probly 10 times more than 1950.
Posted By: ED1938 Re: old photo corner... - 10/08/10 01:24 PM
I grew up in New York city, the (marked) cop cars then...in the 1940's were all Plymouth coupes, they were all dark green with black fenders and white tops. In the 1950's the city switched to ford's but kept the same color scheme.
That picture of all them Chevy cop coupes in Canada reminded me of N.Y....I am sure the choice of cars had nothing to do with a car's dependability but more to do with how much the city's procurement department got "kicked back" from the dealer...Amen

This is from someone else's blog... I wasn't sure if it's really an Amesbury Special, but it's neat because its a 1915! I thought the Amesburys were all white...a repaint?

"Taken on or about September, 1948 in the original showroom of Dooley Brothers Chevrolet/Oldsmobile in Somerville, New Jersey. On the left, a brand-new 1949 Chevrolet sedan and, on the right, a 1915 Chevrolet Amesbury Special. The second ever Chevrolet dealership in the New York area known then as the Newark zone. Pictured left to right: Harry Dooley III, Harry Dooley Jr., and Harry Dooley (standing next to his brother) Michael Bernard Dooley, Bernard Michael Dooley, and (on the fender) Lawrence Michael Dooley, age almost one. Yes - this is a H-3 Amesbury Special, Car No. N8847, that Dooley Chevrolet in Somerville, NJ, owned for many years. B.M. Dooley was VCCA #649. but I believed he sold this #N8847 to R. De Andrade of Wyckoff, NJ, who restored this H-3. I saw this same car at the 1969 Eastern Regional National Meet. N8847 is now owned by the Merrick Auto Musrum in Alda, NE.

So is the Amesbury still black? Am I right thinking they were all white from the factory?

Here's my cool picture for today. From the Chevybombs site... It looks like a truck from one of the "Parade of Progress" shows, but I'm not sure...any one know? It looks like '54 accesory wheel disks, and side trim from the '53 Corvette showcar on the rear splash fenders.

Another neat picture, Roger! I have a real affinity

Likely due to the cars that were around when I was
coming of age, etc.

I'm not sure I recall just who Dick Jones is. (??) Did
he used to have a 38 coupe?? Was he at Silverdale in
August??

Anyway, nice shot of three 50 Chevs. Thnx....

Brewster, I was just commenting on the photo, I had some experiance with a sanding setup, not near this good looking!

Oh I see...All sanders should run white wall duelies on the back! That is one good looking rig. Lots of hose on the back as well... I wonder what that's all about?
Posted By: MrMack Re: old photo corner... - 10/20/10 04:40 AM
Those hoses are for the air brakes on the semi-trailer the tractor is usually connected to via the fifth wheel. One hose is service air and the other is trailer brake air. They are connected to the trailer by connectors known in the trade as a "Gladhand connector".
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 10/20/10 10:24 AM
I assumed that... they just look really long. I guess they look shorter on todays trucks because they are coiled? It just seems an odd way to store them on this otherwise nice looking truck!

From the Warrior's Day Parade in 1920 at the Canadian National Exibition (CNE) in Toronto. Can anyone verify that the car is a Chevrolet? The shape of the front fender is the only thing I can recognize, as so much of the car is covered with the banner.

Sure looks like a Chevy Touring. Headlights look okay. Just not sure about the hood and windshield frame. It is hard to determine the hood shape as it is draped with something. Looks like the cowl kicks up to the bottom of the windshield like a 490 but the fenders are not 490 (look more like a FB series front fender).

Here's Gorries Chevrolet on Gerrard St. in Toronto. The picture is from March of 1956, and there's a beautiful row of new Chevies, including a Nomad. My Grandfather, Kirby Pearce would have been at work this day, running the office and books here. He bought his '51 and his brother Nick's '51 (now mine)here five years earlier.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

I Googled Gorries a while ago, and this group shot from 1952 came back. When I showed my Dad, he was able to pick his father out right away. He's in the fourth row from the front, 3rd from the left. He always wore a hat!

Brewster,

You mention white rear fenders in the "first" picture in the thread. That made
me curious so I went back and looked and it looks like the cars are all
white, except for the black hoods. As I looked at it again, I was reminded
of what I thought when I first saw it --- "that's a pretty weird way
to two-tone a 41 coupe!"

These most recent pictures with white body and black fenders seem like a
more "normal" way to two-tone that body style.

computer Just my 2 cents.....

Here's a couple of interesting ones. The first one is of a 20's Chevy transformed into a railroad speeder. It was used to haul people and supplies to a remote logging camp near Hearst, ON in the 40's. The other one is of the motorcade on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's (Princess at the time) visit to Kapuskasing, ON in 1951. She must have been in the third car which looks like a Caddy.

Unfortunately the Inn isn't there any more. It was demolished in 2008, exactly when it was 80 years old. I slept thee on my wedding night, in the same suite Ole Liz had stayed in.

Double sided whitewalls were the standard way to make whitewall tires during pre-WWII period. Don't know exactly when they went to single-sided WW tire.

It's been a while since I (or anyone else...hint!) added to the old photo corner...

First up is a shot from the Canadian National Exposition (CNE) from 1955. I copied the picture from urbantoronto.ca and it was uploaded and taken by a user on that site also named Brewster. Of note is the Corvette Nomad show car.
[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

The second picture is from The City of Toronto archives, and shows a neat '53 sedan delivery. I would guess the picture is late '54 going by the Buick coming the other way and the licence plate colour.

The roof covering waas not paper. It was some kind of silver material, probably some type of plastic reinforced with a thread material. I used to bring some home and use it for covering things to protect them from the weather, etc.

That could have been a military set up. Could be an aircraft controller. Looks like the radio set up was later than the vehicle it was mounted in. I would venture around 1955 +/-.

Brewster,

If you care to know.....The picture with the '58 Corvette is a downtown Portland, OR
parking lot, right off the west end of the Morrison Brdg. The photographer would
have been on SW 2nd ave. The car is pointed toward SW Washington St.
The rear of the car is "pointed" toward SW Alder St. Some nice cars parked there
other than the Corvette....altho it's the "neatest" one by far.

I've gone by that lot 1000's of times in the 65 years I've lived in Portland.
Thnx for posting more cool pix!!!

Bill.

The car in Hopalongs picture may be a 37 or 38 Packard. Note that it has a trunk below the rumble seat. I know a fellow who hot rodded a 37. I wouldn't have done it since he had a 37 coach as a parts car too.

America's oldest Chevrolet Dealership, Colussy motors in Bridgeville PA. Opened in 1918, it is still in the Colussy family. Check out the Youtube Chevrolet Spot as well...

We have an older Chevrolet dealer here in the Milwaukee area. Holz Motors in the suburb of Hales Corners has been a Chevrolet dealer since 1915. The dealership was started in 1915 By the father of the present owner so it has been in one family all those years.
It is one of the Chevrolet dealerships featured in the book - Chevrolet Dealership History.
I will be calling on the mechanics tomorrow - one of my best tool acounts. It is also the largest "single store" Chevrolet dealer in Wisconsin.

When began in 1914 they did not handle the Chevrolet car. That happened in 1915.
The 4th of July Holz car show is also one of the largest "free" cars shows in the state with over 1500 cas on display.

Colussy's claim to the countries oldest dealership may be because they are still in the same building. Holz's moved in the 1960's...

I work (sell tools) two mornings a week. Visit a Buick/GMC, a Chevrolet and a Ford dealership plus several independent shops.
Keeps me up-to-date with the "modern" cars and I have worked with mechanics for over 60 years so it is part of my life.
Also keeps me young.

Just for Gene! Holz Motors, Milwaukee WI. I don't trust that the pictures match the info, seeing as the poster could not even come close to telling the years...
Maybe Gene could add some remarks as well...
First pic is listed as "about 1917". Clearly that's a '29 parked out front!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Second pic has 1936 written on it, but hey... there's a '49-'50 Fleetline and sedan in the picture! The building looks quite different, and I'm not 100% sure it's even Holz's!

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Third pic is 1962... A new building across the street...

Yeah, and the pick-up is at least a '47...In the 1936 picture.
Posted By: Chev Nut Re: old photo corner... - 12/02/12 02:25 AM
For the first picture. The buildings on the right are still there . the building towards the front has been remodeled and is still a bar and resturant. Due to planned street widing that build either will be moved to removed. Not sure about the building on the left. Chevrolet sign looks "retouched" and Mr. Holz couldn't give me a positive answer when I questioned him about the original building.
Picture #2 wwas the next bilding. I would suspect it was built in 1936. Was torn down in 1961 and in full use til that time. The used car lot is in front of the present building which is now set back farther. #3 is the new building when it was "opened" in late 1961. My father sold cars there from 1961 til the mid 1970's.
I have been calling on the mechanics since 1977. Feel like an employee.
The new building was expanded in about 1988. The building was just expanded againg and redone to Chevrolet's corprate look.
The above pictures as well as some others are on display in the dealership.
The street you are looking down (to the west) in the first picture is called Janesville Road and at one time wae the main road to Janesville.

Interesting picture of a 1954 Chevrolet 150 sedan outside of Maple Leaf Stadium, Toronto. The picture was taken in 1956. The stadium was home to our minor League Baseball team, not to be confused with Maple Leaf Gardens, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Team. Personally, I also find this photo interesting, as the Loblaws sign in the background is the parent company of the grocery store that I have worked at for the past 23 years.

The Wawona Tunnel Tree stood in Yosemite Park for 2300 years. In 1881 two men were paid $75 to cut a tunnel through it, enlarging an existing fire scar. The tree fell under the weight of snow in 1969, and is now known as the Fallen Tunnel Tree.

A couple of early low-riders. These years cars look better/sleeker when they are weighted down. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to lower my '31 Coach a couple of inches to remedy the "high rear-end" look while retaining everything else original spec. May try 2" spacer blocks under rear spring saddles with long U bolts.

My guess for the distant car in James Dean photo is 1951 Ford, looks to be a 2 door hardtop with fender skirts. Don't know I ever saw a Dodge/Plymouth with skirts, they were very conservative back then. The inverted bathtub look was a Ford Co standard for 3-4 years.

Every so often when I'm Googling for photos to post in this thread I hit a home run! The satisfaction for me sometimes is like finding that rare or missing part you've been looking forever for. Sometimes I set out to find a rare car by googling the year and body style, and hope an old photo shows up, and other times I'll spend hours flipping through photo collections hoping to catch that old Chevy I'm looking for amongst all of the Packards, Model T's, and other lesser brand. One of the cars I'm constantly looking for is an old photo of a 1913-1914 Type C Classic Six. That's right, the first Chevrolets. According to the experts on this site that I've heard from there are two remaining in the world. The restored one in The Sloan Museum, and the older "survivor" one in The Reynolds Museum in Alberta Canada. I have been trying for a few years now to find even just a picture of another Classic Six, Type C. The only photos I've seen are the popular ones of Louis Chevrolet driving the prototype on the streets of Detroit, and the photos outside the factory of the first production car with various GM executives around it. Other than those, I've seen one car on a Flicker account that I have my doubts as to it being a Classic Six, as it looks more like a Light Six.

Last night I finally had a break through... and it happened off of a link right from our site. An article written by Arend Stolte ("Arend" on Chat) for The Running Board, of The Edmonton Antique Car Club, contained photos of the Reynolds Chevrolet taken in the 1950's. My thanks to Arend for sending me the photos to add to this thread.

If anyone else has early photos of a 1913-1914 Classic Six, please post them to the thread, or PM me if you need help doing it.

Here is the car today, and the pictures for our thread...

From theoldmotor.com comes this picture of a lady wrenching on a 1915 early Four cylinder car. It is believed that the picture was a promotional tool for the suffragette movement to get women the right to vote in the USA. Note the posters in the windshield of the car...

Here's the quote that comes with this photo...

"Grandview resident Charles Butterworth of Lincoln Road stands with his foot on the running board of his 1913 Chevrolet Little Four roadster. The two passenger car was built in Flint, Michigan by the Little Motor Company and sold ("fully equipped") for $690. Its 20 horsepower four cylinder engine with a specially designed carburetor provided sufficient power for this speedster. Its leather seats and mohair convertible top with removable curtains made it a desirable second car for the wealthy. The advertisement for the car stated "with its full nickled mountings, there is no brass to polish!"

Now, is it a Chevrolet, or a Little? The license plate covers the rad ornament, and the gas tank can not be read either. The plates read 1913, but is the car older?

Another night, another rare find! Courtesy of R58c on Flickr...The Swiss army had GM Continental convert 1939 Chevrolets into four door convertibles for staff use in '39. Here we see one of them pressed into service somewhere in Europe by the Wehrmacht. Sorry about the pink high lighting, they were done by the Flickr account holder to identify the unit markings. Also found is a 1938 Cabriolet.

The picture I see is a sedan. However my 51 hardtop(std shift)is radio delete. I believe the car came from northern Maine so perhaps no close radio station and no need for a radio.

So you think they ripped a roof off of a sedan to take the picture? The vent windows look convertible though...

I think there's something fishy with that photo... The door panel is wrong as well. I wonder if they edited over the material on it. You should be able to see the chrome and the chorded material over the leather. It looks more like a plain panel out of a special series car...

Tonight I received a photo from one of our fellow Chevy Chat Members, m006840, to post on the thread. Steve says that "I have attached a photo of my grandfather & grandmother (on left) with her sister and husband somewhere in northern New Hampshire. The picture was taken around 1920 or 1921. My mother was born in Nov. of 1921 and I believe the picture was taken prior to her birth. Not sure of the year of the car so perhaps someone could pin that down. Both grandparents drove in the early years and both had chaffeurs licenses. My grandmother always bragged that she never was stranded in her Chevrolet."

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]
Posted By: m006840 Re: old photo corner... - 01/24/13 01:12 PM
Thank you Brewster for your assistance. Perhaps one of the four cyl followers will be able to confirm the year of the car.

Posted By: ChevyGuru Re: old photo corner... - 01/25/13 01:35 AM
My first instinct was that this might be the "big" Chevrolet, the FB, etc. since that many people will fit on the running board, and it just looks slightly large for a 490. But I believe the FB always wore a 6 lug rim, and this car has 5, which makes it a 490 in this era. The curve of the front fender line says 1920 or later, as the 1919 490 still sported a straight line from the top of the front fender crown down to the front end of the running board. The top material does not come forward to the rear-most, rearward leaning top iron (called a "gypsy top," when it does) and that feature was introduced in 1922. Therefore, I can narrow it down to either a 1920 or a 1921 490, but I cannot see anything that allows me to distinguish which of those two years it is. But it is definitely either a 1920 or '21 490.
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 01/25/13 02:42 AM
Would the lack of a bar between the headlights make it a 1921?
Posted By: ChevyGuru Re: old photo corner... - 01/25/13 03:25 PM
I believe neither the 1920 or 1921 490 had a headlight cross bar, so that does not distinguish the year.

Posted By: m006840 Re: old photo corner... - 01/25/13 10:56 PM
Thanks ChevyGuru. I believe their next car was a 28 (open car-have picture but only forward parts visible) and then a 35 cabriolet. Gram did a lot of driving and said she always drove with the top down-summer and winter!
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 01/26/13 05:34 AM
Steve... onto the next mystery! We'll have to see the pic of the '35 cabriolet now, seeing as Chevrolet didn't make one! It'll either be a roadster for '35; or a 1934 or 1936 if it's a cabrio...

Another great photo from Steve tonight! He writes...

I have been unable to locate the picture of my grandmother and the "35 whatever model", but the above photo is I believe of a 28. If not I'm sure someone will identify it accurately. Of particular interest the photo verifies something gram used to tell me and that was she "always drove with the top down, even in winter".

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Steve... It's definitely not a '1928. I believe it is a 1930, going by the size of the hubcap on the wire wheel. 1929 used a much smaller cap. It looks to be a roadster as well. It is really a great picture, especially as it goes with the story you've told!

Another small coincidence... it looks to be the same car as I posted above it with the stolen sign!
Posted By: Back Roads Re: old photo corner... - 01/28/13 03:43 PM
A 1930 radiator splash apron and the crank hole cover is missing. It must be a 1930.
Posted By: m006840 Re: old photo corner... - 01/28/13 04:00 PM
Thanks again to Brewster for posting. I'm sure that fur collar helped to keep her warm, but I don't think she was going far by the looks of her shoes. Also I think I know the street the car is parked on and she sure had some faith in the parking brake.

PS. I have no idea what she did with the stolen sign!!
Posted By: chevrolet6 Re: old photo corner... - 01/28/13 11:02 PM
The car with the stolen sign is right hand drive and the license plate is mounted on the bumper and has NSW before the numbers and probably stands for New South Wales a state in Australia. The license plate on the 1930 roadster isn't on the bumper.

Another incredible set of pictures were sent to me today, this time from ozjim in Australia. Jim writes "Here is the first photo of Rowston’s Garage here in Cowra. This is the 1934 parade of the General Motors Vehicles. Basically GM would travel town to town through the rural areas, giving a unique display of the cars and models offered for sale that could be bought through the local dealer.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

This is the following year, 1935...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

This is a photo of the dealership. As you can see there are all of the various makes from the GM family on the front window as well as everything else. The Rowston family still have a number of businesses here in town just no longer the GM dealership. Old Tom Rowston was quite a salesman! There are still a good number of Chevrolets, Buicks and Pontiacs in the district. I got these and other photos from his grandson. On another note he was also the McCormick Dearing Tractor agent and once sold 24 tractors in one order. He then had them all delivered at one time (a great photo of the train pulling into Cowra Station) and then he organized all the Farmers who bought them to pick them up together and again parade through town.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Thanks for sending the pictures, Jim! Anyone else with old pictures is always welcome to post them up to our thread, or PM me if you need assistance.

Posted By: Chipper Re: old photo corner... - 02/27/13 03:12 PM
That is indeed a headlight aiming machine. They were used to have the lights illuminate the road without blinding on coming drivers. Texas required headlight aiming as part of the safety inspection up to the 1980s. As we mature and bright lights temporarily blind us when night driving is seems to be a good idea to require headlight aiming again.

Last night I received another great couple of photos from Australia. Brian (lachlan31 on Chat) had the other photos that we talked about in the Cowra pictures. First is a 1924 Touring that was pulled out of the same showroom floor for a local parade. It's a bit hard to see the car under all of those decorations, but I thought the plates above the running board looked like a fairly unique piece.

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

The other photo is a train load of McCormick Deering tractors arriving in Cowra. The dealer had all of the local farmers come pick them up at the same time, and organized a parade much like the Chevrolet parades pictured earlier. Brian thinks this was likely right after the war, hence the big order. I've added this pic to our "Chevys Only" thread just because it related to the earlier pictures Jim sent... and it's pretty cool! Now we'll get back to the Chevys!

The car was parked sometime between 1941 & 1945. I've managed to find everything for the car except one garnish. After Glen Rarick & I dug it up & brought it home the property owner used a metal detector & sent another 3 or 4 boxes full of parts for the car. I purchased a wood kit from Rodman & a drivetrain from a street rodder. It's getting there but I'm going to do my 33 Standard for the show in 3 years. So yes it is saved & part way to restoration. It is one of only 2 known at the moment.
Pat has done an amazing job with that car. He's a true insperation to this hobby...Joe

Todays entry is another from my parent's photo album. The first is my Grandpa's brand new 1951. That's my Dad at 8yrs old. I would assume that Grandpa was washing the Chevy, and took the picture. My Grandpa drove the car to work at Gorries Chevrolet in Toronto until 1955, and then City Buick until his retirement in 1963. In '63 he bought a new Acadian (The Canadian Pontiac version of the Chevy II) and gave the car to Dad to drive to university. Dad drove it until the floors fell out of it, then sold it. He still had my Uncle Nick's '51 and bought himself a new Valiant. The second picture is Grandpa's '51 at their cottage near Little Britain, Ontario. It would likely be either 1957 or 1959 going by the license plate colour.

Yes, I remember that is the headlight tool. They used it so you could get your state inspection sticker. First low beam and then high beam so you would not blind the car coming toward you in the other lane.

Posted By: Chipper Re: old photo corner... - 03/21/13 02:21 PM
I suspect that the photo of the '33 Phaeton was an pre-production or prototype model. Often those vehicles used some parts from earlier year models as the actual production parts were not yet available.

CAUTION: Factory photos are often of pre-production or prototypes and/or artist retouched. That also goes for some sales literature. The photos were used for both internal and external promotional purposes and should not be considered to be 100% accurate to actual production.

I have a question. How does one go about finding old dealership photos? I have all the paperwork with my car from when it was bought new in 1930. And I would like to try and find a picture of the dealership where it was bought. It was Lawerence County Chevrolet, Moulton Alabama. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried googling your 1930's dealership, but got zero hits. Local records or a local library would be your best bet.

It was just pointed out to me... Are those 1947's on the truck from Flint? The grille on the car at the rear of the transporter looks like a '47 grille, but it is a bit of a blurry photo. Did Chevrolet make cars in Flint during 1946?
Posted By: Ed_Osier Re: old photo corner... - 04/05/13 01:59 AM
Don't know where they were made but that is definitely a 47
grille. there is a noticeable difference between 46 and 47.
Really neat picture!
Posted By: Chev Nut Re: old photo corner... - 04/05/13 02:20 AM
No belt moulding = 1947. Flint was the main plant so they probably were the first to deliver 1946 models.
Posted By: Oldie Re: old photo corner... - 04/05/13 01:28 PM
Interesting Question: When did Flint Assembly start to produce 1946 vehicles after WWII? The data I have covering the assembly start and finish dates by model year has the Flint Plant column vacant for the 1946 model builds. The other assembly plants in the Chevrolet line started assembling vehicles as early as October 1945 and as late as September 1946 with the majority starting is April - May 1946. The Flint plant is listed but the data column has an X in each box.

I appears that Flint did not start to assemble Post War vehicles until May 1947 with the 1947 models. The other Chevrolet plants started the 1947 model builds in January 1947.
Somewhere there must be an explaination for this but I have no idea why that occurred.
Posted By: Chipper Re: old photo corner... - 04/05/13 03:02 PM
Oldie,
Great information. I wonder a couple of things. What did Flint build during the War? If it required extensive modification of the assembly line it could have taken a long time to get it back to vehicle assembly. Did they continue to produce the war material after the war ended? Is there still anyone in the Flint area that worked at Chevrolet assembly during that period? Or were there stories in the Flint newspaper that might shed some light on the subject?

I have a Chevrolet assembled in the Norwood, oHIo plant in September 1943 so they apparently still had the vehicle assembly line throughout the war. Other plants may have also. They would have been the first to assemble civilian vehicles. Those converted for artillery, bomb, aircraft engines etc. would have been the last.
Posted By: Chev Nut Re: old photo corner... - 04/05/13 05:03 PM
That then would explain the sign "First Chevrolet Cars Produced in Flint Since 1942."
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 04/05/13 11:00 PM
I'm willing to bet they were set up to build trucks, and just kept going with that from '45 to '47. Anyone have a '45 truck with a data plate?
Posted By: Oldie Re: old photo corner... - 04/06/13 12:53 PM
My data includes truck information also. The Flint plant column has X marks like the passenger columns.
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 04/06/13 04:18 PM
From The Flint Journal...

"Chevrolet built chassis parts, engines and sheet metal body parts for small and medium-duty military trucks and DUKWs - amphibious trucks known as "ducks.'' (The vehicle had a system that could inflate or deflate the tires while in motion, like that on today's Hummer.) Chevrolet Manufacturing in Flint also made aircraft engine parts and the Staghound armored car, which was tested on vacant property owned by Michigan School for the Deaf. Staghounds were built for the British."

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Another happening at the time was Chevrolet built a new plant on VanSlyke Road that was set up for automobile production. The old factory had a major flood at the time of the move to the new one.

The white has me beat too. I note the closest cars have white tops too but the white seems inconsistent in all rows. If it was some form of transport protection, one would expect the crown of the fenders to be covered too.

I like those wide white walls on the BelAir, which is sitting on a turn table in the South Tacoma Chevrolet showroom. In 1939 my dad traded his '32 coach in on a '37 coach that was being displayed on that same turn table and my '33 coupe was displayed on it back in the late 60s during a Puget Sound Region car show there. The showroom is still showing cars, but no longer a Chevrolet dealership.

The picture of the pace car in Chevrolet History shows it with white walls. Even mentions the fact that they are Firestone tires. Firestone made all the race car tires back then.

I wonder what it wore out of the factory then. I guess they wouldn't spring for the white walls if they knew Firestone was going to swap them at the track. Is this just an early picture?

Brian writes "1. the ”˜29 tourer is a photo I purchased from an estate sale, they were selling the frame, the person said it was of her uncle and his new car? so there is a couple of things a bit unusual for a new Chev from a dealer.
The first is the paint job, no black fenders. They do look a shade or two darker than the body though, it has new shiny step plates and kick plates, they were always available here, wind wings, mascot, bumpers and it looks like leather grabs on the front doors and I just noticed mud flaps, no wonder he is smiling.

2. This poor old (or would have been a pretty new) ”˜27 sedan on it’s roof after a fall from a bridge, looks like only one broken window, probably the one he escaped from, pretty tough those wooden frames.

I suspect that all other photographs of young ladies adorning Chevrolets were faked. Or else the girls were highly paid. These beauties look like volunteers to me. You can't fake a happy smile like that. Can't neither!

Looks like I'm going to have to get going on the 41 project again. There is some strong incentive in that photograph to do so. Is too!

From Theoldmotor .com This photo shows the final inspection station on the Chevrolet assembly line, at the General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Missouri, during 1956. The plant was next to the Fairfax Airport and was the former location of the North American Bomber Production Plant, where the B-25 Mitchell was manufactured during World War II. GM bought the former North American Aviation plant in 1945 and setup this Chevrolet facility.
This assembly plant was in operation until 1986, when a modern replacement plant Fairfax Number Two, was opened on the closed original Fairfax Airport.

In Gene's words...
"My uncles 1927 Essex. His first and only car. Was almost new when he "tipped it over".
Prior to that he blew the engine while still under warranty. A common problem with the Essex as it had a 5 to 1 rear axle ratio."

Last night this thread went over 100,000 views! I want to thank all of those that have been checking it out, adding to it, and sharing it. I've noticed it is getting more views from outside our forum, as some of you have been sharing links on your blogs, other forums, and social media. Who knows, maybe looking at beautiful, original old Chevrolets will convince someone to restore one!

Last night I was surfing the VCCA page on Facebook, ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/50230437832/ ) and befriended Kerry Glenn. Kerry has been doing the same thing that I have been doing... stealing photos off of the internet, and posting them for their educational value to other non-profit sites!! His collection is large, and tied up most of my evening as I robbed him blind of his (well, someones!) pictures to share here with you guys!

I'll start with one for Charlie. I'm sure he knows the real story behind this 1941 coupe...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Would anyone out there know where and why this display of 1950's was set up?

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

From Kerry..."This advertising poster (18" by 24") dates from 1951 for the Paul N. Hogg Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Frigidaire dealership in the small town (pop. 800) of Atglen - Chester County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Hogg acquired the Chevrolet franchise in 1924 and the Frigidaire (a General Motors subsidiary until 1979) franchise shortly after (sold off in 1952), and the Oldsmobile franchise in 1932. The dealership was closed in a 1964 General Motors purge of small dealerships with obsolete buildings and facilities. P. N. Hogg died in 1978."

Brewster,

Thanks to you and all the other heavy hitters who post pictures. That includes, but is not limited to you, Ray and Daryl Scott. That there Ray fellow is the one from down under. :aust: I think that's his name. Who cares? Agrin Agrin

Anyway, over a 100K views is a testament to how much we enjoy some things immensely. Like photos. And engine bays (That's for you, CC. Who would have thunk it?) stressed

That heavily damaged 41 was a result of it being in a demolition derby in the midwest somewhere. All the other combatant vehicles were deuce and a half's (2 1/2 ton military trucks). After the event, I think it was Tiny or Uncle Ed snuck into the arena driving a 1938 and made off with the left door. Snatched it right off, The number "38" was painted on the door. They couldn't stand it. So that's what happened. Is too! It was still drivable! dance

BTW: That tough old 41 won the derby. Did too! Agrin

Another great old picture moment today...

I was outside weeding the flower bed and, as happens quite often, all of a sudden there is a guy on the driveway, wanting to look at the Chevs. Eric is the nephew of my 90 year old neighbour, Bob. He owns 7 old cars, including a 1954 sedan, a 1961 Bel Air Flat Top Coupe, and a 1967 Camaro. Needless to say we had a lot to talk about! After an hour or so, Bob's wife Becky comes out holding this photo. Bob has not been doing well, and is confined to bed. He could hear us talking cars, so had Becky bring out the photo of his first new car, a 1951 special sedan. The photo was taken when the car was brand new. Obviously a special photo to Bob, as he had it blown up into an 8X10 print...

That's one serious "Rescue Truck," Brewster. Our Area 3 Director, Dave Gowan, would go nuts over that. He's a real nut for "specialty trucks." As far as I know, he's not on here much. Too bad he'll likely not see it.

Another great photo, Brewster. That kid was digging the ride in that "vette" I'm sure. I'd take a '59 Biscayne and call it a day.

Here's one of the Kickapoo Hotel and Shell service station in our fair city. Building still stands today. I think its a '46 on the street and if you squint you can make out another Chevy in the garage area I believe.

Here's a nearby shot of the same are in the late 1920's. I think there's a little 1926 Chevrolet (maybe a landau coupe?) in the front of the traffic scene. There's also a shop that specializes in "Chromium Plating". Sign us all up.

we had an identical 52 green steel woody back in the 60"'s. it had 225K miles on it when we bought it for $125. the stove bolt was worn out. i installed a 66 455ci Olds with muncie and a 57 chevy rear end. it was our daily driver for better than 6 years. we loaded it up one summer and took our youngest daughter on a cross country trip to so calif to visit friends. eventually the frame rust prompted us to sell the old girl. its currently in our area as a street rod. mike

And here's a couple from a series of photos displayed at a local show this summer. They're from the original and current owner of a 1965 Chevelle Z16 SS 396. His father owned a Chevrolet dealer in Farmington, Illinois near Peoria. The son purchased and raced the Z16 across the midwest for a few years and his Dad's dealership sponsored it. Not a bad gig, eh? He still owns the car today, and has returned it to 100% as-delivered condition.

Pat's right... 1939- 1941 Lincoln. The first few years had vertical tail lights that were on the tail pan, not the fenders. The post war cars had them moved to chrome housings on the rear fenders.

Rather unusual to see a 150 coupe with two tone paint and fender skirs and some kind of wheel covers.

Speaking of the early Chevrolet's, I wrote in last year wondering why the 100 years of Chev's photos in the home page section is missing photo's of models for several early years, specifically 1913, '14, '18, '23, and '24. Someone said they would try to get the blanks filled in. Perhaps about time. Brewster, perhaps you should take on that task as you have such a great interest in early photo's.
Posted By: Bill Barker Re: old photo corner... - 08/14/13 01:12 AM
When I originally created that listing (about 5 years BEFORE the 100th anniversary), I also made a rule to myself, that I'd only use MEMBERS cars in the album display.

Over time, there were certain years that just never provided a photo to me. I could have taken (stolen) one from someone else's web page - but I thought that it was important to keep it as a recognition of our member's vehicles.

Now, techology has changed enough, that I'd like to completely change the underlying code. It is fairly labor-intensive to continue to modify it. There are many, many easier ways to post photos now.

The 1937 roadster appears to be a Master Deluxe Sports roadster with the master deluxe badge on the grill.
Notice also the two colour wheels , white (cream?) centres with black rims. This was a standard feature of Holden body chevs, which sadly is often overlooked during restoration, Most going for a MONO colour to match the body. Sad really.

Were all the wheels this color regardless of the body color? I have a '37 Holden bodied Tourer that appears to be a very dark blue. Would the wheels be white and black, or dark blue and black, or the body color dark blue alone?
Thanks, Ardie

From the Blog at Hemmings Motor News...

According to NASA, this is the Franklin PS-2 training glider…about to be towed aloft by the specially modified 1937 Chevrolet in front. NACA researchers used the PS-2 in a study of ground effect on a towed glider. Langley flew two of the Franklin gliders in the late 1930s, but the Navy never really found a good use for training gliders.

Hi Ardie. Brewster has alerted me to your post.

The three colour pictures( artist impressions) of 1937 cars in the sales brochure that I have shows a tan colored tourer with the same body colour on the full wheel. An Army green sloper with Army green wheels, and a roadster in a Dark smoke grey colour with the same coloured wheels.

Now this seems to contradict the picture of the roadster shown
with the black rims and the body coloured wheel centres.
But Keep in mind that the artist may not have seen a production car before producing the sales brochure, and may have only seen drawings also.

Now if you go and look at the 1938 sales catalog. The wheels are all black rims an all cars shown EXCEPT ONE The sloper, and body colour on the centres and rims. The colours shown are ,a deep red sedan ,a yellowy cream roadster, the same as 1937 sloper green with full body colour wheels, and a blue 1938 tourer, with blue body colour wheels with black outer rims. The body pin strip is red The top is a beige / tan colour , and the wheels also have
2 red pinstripes on the blue centre just out from the hub cap.

The 1939 sales catalogue has an error in the wheels depicted, again showing 1937-38 wheels . They are Dark blue centre , with black rims, Red centre with black rims , green centre with black rims on a Coolangatta cream roadster, same colour wheels on a green roadster. All show with 2 gold or yellow pinstripes.
An original picture of my 1939 sedan in the early mid 1940's when the car was in original factory paint shows black rims with white (maybe cream) wheel centres on an ivory car. Another 1939 colour was red centres with black rims.

The 1940 sales catalogue then shows a change away from body colour for the wheel centres . Dark blue sedan maybe full blue wheels (maybe black rims) with white pinstripes.
lighter blue sedan ,black rims with maybe body colour centre with white pinstripes. 1940 red sloper with black rims strange pink-cream colour for the wheel centres with red body colour pin stripes.

So after all that I believe that the roadster shown is correct, and the 1937 sales catalog incorrect. I think if we can dig up a few more original 1937 Australian pictures it will give us an answer that is more definite.

I have paint stripped over 20 1939 wheels , and they all seemed to only have black paint on the inside (tyre ) of the rim. so think that all rims at manufacture where painted black, and then finished painted and striped at the various state assembly plants around Australia, which also could add to even more variations.

The cheaper the model , the less paint they would have put on the wheels , hence centre painting only , and leave the rim in the delivered black.

Sorry for the long winded reply everyone.

G'day Jack, I think I have the same brochure, did you notice the artist had an American hub cap on the cover and on all the cars in the brochure? I agree with you as I had an all original 1938 Coupe Utility that had black rims with body coloured centres and the same colour pinstriping as on the body. We'll have to talk about Australian sales brochures sometime.

Can anyone explain why Chevrolet seemed to be parading around more than just the one "10 millionth" car in 1934? I find it odd that 10,000,021 would be a show piece... were all 21+ cars paraded around? The same man is in both pictures, the car has the same options (spot light) but the decals are different... is it the same car?

Seeing they had several thousand dealers in 1934 they would have had more than a few cars to show around and use for advertising.

This is a photo we had developed from a negative we had found in a drawer bottom. It was taken in 1930 and shows my father-in- law's Whippet and his dad's 1929 Chevrolet. According to my father-in-law's recollections, his dad's car was notorious for snapping axles. I wanted to post it here earlier but could not find it. We found it the other day looking for something else.

Pat,
While the photo may have been taken in 1930 (haven't been able to blow up the license plate so I can read the year) the Chevrolet pictured is a 1927 Landau Sedan. The middle of the three sedans produced during the '27 model year. It is definitely a Canadian model with the nickle plated radiator shell and wood spoke wheels on a closed car. FYI, the US closed cars had aluminum shells and disc wheels. The open cars wood wheels. Just the opposite in Canada. BTW the other wheels were available at extra cost.

Have no idea the year of the Whippet. Not nearly as interested in it as the Chevy.

Here's one that only fits the thread partly. My father reunited with his car. His photo was taken in 1942, three years before he purchased it. The car photo was taken this November, 71 years later. He was 28 in the photo. The car turned 80 when the 2014's came out. It sat in a field for over 50 years and has taken me 8 years to restore. I suppose we can call that a time warp. At the same time, I'd like to thank everyone here who has helped me over the years. ok

Ardie, Do you have the Holden Body number tag , and Holden body paint tag on the cowl under the hood? If you do what is the paint abbreviation on the paint code tag?

Where did the name "Black Widow" come from? We never called them that back in 1957.
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 12/29/13 03:50 AM
"Black Widow" was the nickname given to the black painted 1957 Chevrolet 150's that were factory backed by Chevrolet in Nascar racing. The factory program put together a few cars before they were outlawed. It was based off the same sedan that Chevy sold to police fleets and the U.S. Army, only with a dose of thrill, a fuel-injected 283ci V-8 straight out of the Corvette that boasted 270 hp. The ironic thing is the fuelie 283 was the reason NASCAR outlawed the car, because it didn't have a carburetor. It also came with six lug truck suspension.

That's from SuperChevy.com

Posted By: Mike McCagh Re: old photo corner... - 12/29/13 05:03 AM
the black widows, of which 40+were built by vince piggins in the atlanta area under the name of SEDCO, were built with 57 283 ci, 283 Hp FI engines, not the 2x4 wcfb 270 hp engines. i've examined 3 "black widows" over the years and my impression being all three were clones. there are quite a few parts unique to a 57 pass car Fuelie that were missing on the clones. in summary, there were about 40 widows, about 1000 pass car 57 FI's and a little over 1000 FI vettes in 57. they are my favorite chevys and i've been lucky enough to have bought and restored a pair of 57 fi vets and one 57 pass car FI. if anyone out in vcca land finds a 57 chevy FI and needs help in differentiating a real from clone, give me a call or email.happy new year guys, mike
Posted By: Chev Nut Re: old photo corner... - 12/29/13 05:51 PM
I was around in 1957 and followed stock car racing. I can't recall the Black Widow name used for anything back then.
The fuel injection was not "out lawed" in 1957 because it didn't have a carburetor. The NASCAR guys made all makes limited to a single carburetor. Also the supercharged Ford engine was elminated as well as the mmany makes that offered dual fours and tri-carbs. That was a time when the manufactors backed out of racing due to saftey concerns (and the government).
Chevrolet also put out a publication in 1957 suggesting how to build a stock car and what special parts were legal and available from Chevrolet. I have had a copy since 1957 and they are reproduced today.
Not on the picture of the 1957 it even had windshiels wipers and the head lights were real, not just decals.

Yup...likely some clever announcer or promoter gave them the name. I doubt Chevrolet would want their car known as a husband killer!

Back to the lady sitting in the white convertible,

Hey, Brewster. Not so fast buster,

How can you tell that the convertible is a 1949 and not a 1950?

Going by the speedometer and the clock it's hard to tell. The darkness of the "ring" in the speedometer face looks like a more like a 1949 while the square in the clock looks lighter *gray) and more like a 1950.

First impression to me, said a 1950 but then I noted you said it was a 1949. I'm not sure. Are you? Why?

Anyone else puzzled or think that Brewster is just guessing? Agrin nanana

Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 12/30/13 02:44 PM
I used an educated guess, Charlie. All the dash knobs on this are cream. On my '50 they are a dark grey. The steering wheel looks to be painted a different colour as well. And I may be wrong on this one, but wouldn't the top of the dash and the window garnish be a dark colour if it was a 1950? Green or black depending on the leather colour? We can go back a few pages and look at a '50 here...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]
Posted By: Chev Nut Re: old photo corner... - 12/30/13 04:31 PM
The dash knob color may be washed out.
The 1950 BelAir and convertible hada black rimmed steering wheel, 1949 had the lighter tan rim.
1949 dash had lighter color on top, darker on the bottom. Convertible dash mayhave been sollid exterior type color.
Car pictured may be an early pre-production model a a prop type display.

Jack I did get the pics of the wheels. Thank you. Unfortunately, I do not have the under bonnet paint tag on my car. I do have the number tag. I am only going on color by the paint remnants deep inside the doors, directly under the bonnet, etc. and those areas indicate a very dark blue.

You can really see the colour difference in the speedo and steering wheel when the pics are side by side. You can also see that the clock is different colours.
Posted By: jack39rdstr Re: old photo corner... - 12/30/13 11:30 PM
Ardie, the reason I asked if you had the paint plate abbreviation is that the History of Holden is a bit lacking in the chart for 1937 paint colours. It only lists two colours available for the Standard tourer, being Pearl Brown Med , and Coronardo Tan. BUT these are listed as being supplemental colours after AUGUST 1937 , so it doesn't mean that blue wasn't available before 1937. But they do have the 1936 colours listed. There seems to be a lot missing for the whole 1937 range. The 1937 Master (deluxe) Tourer is listed as Pearl Brown medium only.

With regards to the wheel colours. The only reference for body colour and wheel colour combinations that I have found ,apart from the 1937 38 39 40 sales Brochures is this 1939 OLDSMOBILE webpage. It has the combinations available for 1939 , and has both styles of wheels with black rims and coloured centres, and full coloured wheels. Some nice pictures from the 1939 olds catalogue as well.

1939 OLDMOBILE HOME PAGE

NOW , my choice of colours for a Dark blue 1937 car . Options could be Full dark blue to match Body colour with twin pin stripes, maybe to match any body striping. Dark Blue with Black rims and pin striping to match body striping. Silver centres with black rim and twin light blue pin strips. The silver on the wheel I have looks very much like Rally wheel Argent silver, with a Gloss to it.(maybe clear coat the Argent silver). The pinstripes on this wheel , are definitely a light blue. Or a light blue wheel centre with black rims and twin dark blue pinstripes.

I was hoping that in my 1937 to 1938 wheels that I have , that I would have a blue one , but the other 4 I have , all have original green on the back,( and lots of layers of house paint over the front). The other two wheels I have are buried deep in my shed, and I can't remember the paint ,(if any) on them.

I will keep my eyes out for other 37-38 wheels in the future.

Posted By: jack39rdstr Re: old photo corner... - 12/31/13 03:56 AM
Just an ammendment to the 1937 Master (deluxe) tourer, It was available in Bancroft Blue , and Peterkin Grey, as supplemental colours after August 1937.

I may need some help ID'ing this car. This is my Great Great Grandma & Grandpa Elger and it was taken sometime in the late 20's here in Peoria. I believe the car he's touching up is a 1925 or 1926 Chevrolet Superior Sedan, but I'm not good at identifying those years. He was a Chevy guy, and his previous car was a 1919 490 touring.

Very nice '31, likely a 5W Sport Coupe (rumble seat) as it has the factory cowl lights and stoneguard. It also has the accessory Viking twist-on cap. Photos like these give a good impression of the general sheen of the paint, not real glossy as seen on hood sides for example. Hard to emulate that look today.
Posted By: Chipper Re: old photo corner... - 02/25/14 11:26 PM
Looks like a staged photo with new or almost new car prepped for the shot. You can get a good idea of the amount of gloss but looking at the reflection of the model and building molding in the passenger door. It is not a modern high gloss as has been pointed out numerous times. Over restoration on paint is a common situation.

I am the little squirt in the pictures. The only pictures I can find of our 1931. Picture taken in 1938. Car was replaced with a 1934 in 1941. It (the 1931) replaced a 1927 coach - which I have no pictures of.
The '31 was a standard model but had an accessory grille screen. Was the common black and dark blue. For some reason it had 1933 hub caps but was a nice original car. Was sold to my uncle who drove it all over the US.
My fathers first car was a 1923 Essex roadster. That was replaced with a Model T as you could buy them for $10 used and a Chevroletcost $25 during the depression.

The mud flaps were on the car when my father bought it. They were fairly common on a "decked out" car back then.
The 1939 I had in 1949 had mud flaps also when I bought it. I don't have any pictures of that car. Had it for less than a year. A Master Deluxe 4 passenger coupe.

The 1934 Master Town sedan was our war years car. Was around from 1941-1946. Father ordered a new 1946 which never came so bought the low mileage 1942 in Sept. 1946. Car was sold to an uncle in the fall of 1949 when my father became a car salesman. Sold of all things Fords for a few months and when an opening came around he went to the local Chevrolet dealer.
First picture was when we first got the '42.....note some accessories sprouted out a year later.

Pictres taken next to the Milwaukee Mile race track.

1949 Fleetline Special. Sept. 1951-April 1952. Came in as a used car. Had only a heater. Added some goodies. Also had minor front end damage. I got it for a good price and it had only 18,000 miles. I wanted a car with the new post war look. Was a late 1949 and probably the worst car I ever had.

Ah, my 1950 Bel Air Power Glide. After the cheapie 1949 I had all that a 1950 Chevrolet could be. Purchased the car in April 1952 from our office manager. She thought a long war was coming and wanted a brand new car. The '50 had 16,000 miles on it and some accessories. I did find a local dealer that had a set of wing tip guards which I always liked.
The best part of the '50 is that you could drive it at 70 and 75 MPH with out hearing the engine reving. Also was the first Chevrolet that I had that would do over 90 MPH on the level which it did quite often. The speed limit in Wisconsin at that time was 65 MPH and a lot of the traffic moved along at much over that.
The picture with the (Atlantic) ocean in the background was taken at Daytona Beach (Jan 1953).
Was agood car and loved it - until the 1953's came along and you get a 235 engine with a standard transmission.
Sold the 1950 in July of 1953 with 37,000 miles on it.

All 4 of those Good Old Boys are kind of eyeing the cameraman - you can almost hear 'em saying - "You ain't from around here, are you?"

A total of 4 vehicles are in view, and every one of them is a truck - and they're all late model.

I tried blowing it up, but can't quite make out the state or province on the license plate on the Chevy.

It must have been taken in the spring of 1917 [mud and coats] - when it was difficult to get railroad cars - the photo was taken in front of Bunnell Auto Sales Co. the Chevrolet Distributor in Toledo, Ohio. GREAT early photos! And the Type C Classic Six is clearly brand new - look at that shine on the radiator, and the 1913 Ohio tag. Wow, great stuff!

And yes - the Classic Six is a BIG car - here is a photo of me standing beside the only complete survivor at the Sloan Museum, and I am just over 6' tall, so you can see what a big car it is.

Brewster,

Very nice photographs and interesting commentary. Especially about the cord. I hadn't noticed before it was point out.

Three things:

a. Where on the front end of the 1913 Type C Classic Six was the logo?

b. Flipping from one photo to another (Sloan/Ohio) there seems to be a difference in the size of the cowl lights. Maybe that was merely owing to the photography, but still....

c. In the Sloan picture there are two items of interest. One is a handsome work of art. Agrin

Thanks for posting.

While we are at it, I noticed the rad-filler neck also appears different, being completely on top on the early photo, but built into the slope on the Sloan car (Rad also appears a bit more rounded on lead edge for early car). From the early photo, it appears the cowl lights may be set into the cowl rather than free-standing, thereby avoiding interference with hood opening. I'm assuming the Sloan people likely had to do a lot of guessing in putting this survivor together, and its possible in these early runs that details changed regularly as manufacturing processes identified problems or easier ways to do things. These were still pioneer days for car companies in America.
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 03/18/14 02:00 PM
I had noticed the cowl lights being different as well. It made me wonder if this car was a later build. The plate does seem to limit it to being 1913, but it does seem to show differences from the other pictures we've seen before. Notice it also has a crank hole cover. I've yet to see one with the "Chevrolet" script on the front...

There are a lot of interesting issues with this car. Besides the different rad shape/neck, and cowl lights (some pics of classic six's have no cowl lights), I note it is RHD, which I assume would be strange in Ohio in summer of 1913. Was GM building cars in Britain/Australia at the time and could this have been an import? If so, that might explain the slight variations.
Posted By: ChevyGuru Re: old photo corner... - 03/18/14 08:22 PM
Some very interesting comments and observations. Yes, the cowl lights are very different. The "old Ohio" photo shows them flush mounted or recessed into the firewall; and the "current photo" (with me at the Sloan) shows them mounted to it, as is much more commonly seen.

The difference is dependent on whether they are electric lights or gas lights. None of the surviving literature I have seen talks about the option of electric lighting. But there is one photo I have that is allegedly a "prototype" Model C that shows the same flush mounted cowl lights, as seen below. (I hesitate to put up this photo because I am not certain what we are seeing, it is poorly identified. It would seem to be an early example, it also has a double belt line on the body not seen in the production version. But why would the earlier version have electric lights? Changed back to gas in production to save money? Don't know. )
[Linked Image from i1122.photobucket.com]

There are also apparently two different firewall / dash board configurations. One is a simple vertical board (probably the earlier version as seen above). The only sales brochure seems to be a pretty early one, never revised, which would probably have been printed in very early 1913. Remember, this car was first built as a 1913 model with production of literally just a handful (less than 10) beginning in December 1912.

Rather than an electric starter, it featured an "England" brand of compressed air starter, later discontinued.

The later version dash / firewall had the "notched" design, as seen also on the contemporaneous "Little Six" touring, and also on the very earliest production of the first few hundred Model H's (see March G&D article on Model H).

Another early photo is the commonly seen (and so frequently mis-labeled) photo of Louis Chevrolet driving what is certainly a prototype pre-production model; which is noteworthy because it also has the flat firewall/dash - and features square gas cowl lights.
[Linked Image from i1122.photobucket.com]

By the time we get to the Sales Brochure production model, the cowl has evolved into the notched design, and the cowl lights are the gas variety, as seen in most every photo available. This is the front cover of the sales brochure -

[Linked Image from i1122.photobucket.com]

And inside the brochure is a better drawing/photo, with the same configuration -
[Linked Image from i1122.photobucket.com]

It is reasonable to assume the "vintage Ohio photo" shows the typical production model, with electric lights possibly added as a late accessory not mentioned in the catalog, or even possibly added by the owner.

The oldest car, car # 93, the only other (incomplete) example known, is the Reynolds-Alberta museum car in Westaskiwin AB, and it clearly shows stalks for mounting gas style cowl lights. It already has the notched style dash.

[Linked Image from i1122.photobucket.com]

Remember, the car was only sold as 1913 and 1914 models, with virtually no changes - and only just over 400 units of this model were ever built. The flat dash is probably the earliest version.

With respect to the restoration of the Sloan car, there was no guess work needed - it was in very good survivor condition when acquired by the Sloan Museum. It was re-painted and restored by Chevrolet Division in the early 1960's, for the Museum. Prior to that, it was sold new by a large, early Dallas Chevrolet dealer, who later got it back from the original owner in the 1930's, still in very good shape. They displayed it until they sold it to the Sloan in the 1960's - so it is just a 3 owner car, and was never in bad shape. (I was incorrect in my article in the G&D where I said it was owned by GM - it is owned by the Sloan Museum.)

Can't explain the Right Hand Drive in the old photo - good observation. Chevrolet built for export very early, as in the Model H for 1914, but I never saw a reference to the Model C here being built for export. No reason to imagine it wouldn't have been, though. But the Ohio license is a conundrum with RHD. No answer. But we do know the only production location for the Model C is Michigan, and it would have been built for export - not built overseas.

They never put the "Chevrolet" script on the front of the car on the Model C. It only appears on the inside dash, the hubcaps, and the foot pedal plate. And the Model C never wore the Bowtie anywhere on it, first was the Model H.

I believe the radiators are probably the same.

Probably more than you wanted to know....I get carried away.
Posted By: Gunsmoke Re: old photo corner... - 03/18/14 09:01 PM
Not too much Guru, I would enjoy even more of this fascinating history of the first of our cars.

The more I examine the Ohio photo, I become convinced this is not the same car as the Sloan. Among other notable differences (besides rad/neck, RHD and cowl lights), the tops of the fenders clearly rise well above the hood hinge line while for the rest, the top of fender is at or below hinge line. More critical, the Ohio car seems to show a cowl of considerable depth going back fairly flat to the vertical windshield, not a feature in any of the other pictures, those of which have cowls that slope sharply upward. Due to the unexplainable RHD, I'm inclined to think this is a "poser", likely an imported car with features very similar to our ancestor!
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 03/18/14 11:27 PM
The reynolds car has had the cowl lights removed. The first picture in my post above (above Teddy) is that same car in the 1950's. You can see it had the rounded non flush lights. I thought the Ohio car may be left hand drive, just an illusion in the photo. I doubt Chevrolet went to any trouble to export to anywhere other than Canada at that time for 400 units.

Does that brochure contain the other half of the car?
Posted By: ChevyGuru Re: old photo corner... - 03/19/14 12:44 AM
It does! - below

(and I recognized your early photo of the Reynolds car. You had several of it as I recall, being driven around back in the 50's.)

AND - I think Gunsmoke might be onto something, about that being a "poser"...

[Linked Image from i1122.photobucket.com]
Posted By: brewster Re: old photo corner... - 03/19/14 03:05 AM
To answer the "poser" comment…

I think the camera is sitting about 2 feet off the ground, which gives the impression the fenders are higher than they really are. It seems to be below the line of the guys belts in the picture, and none of the other photos are from that height. The photo with Teddy is the closest to having the fenders that high, but you can see by the fellow in the foreground that the camera is well above his waist. I'm not sure if the low angle of the camera is also distorting the rad neck fill, as there is a lot of reflection from that nice new shine that may be hiding some of the angles in the rad shell. If you look at the rad cap and the hubcaps you can see that they are the same distinctive shape as the ones on the Teddy car, and the brochure. It looks like the rad cap for the Reynolds car has been replaced. The cowl does seem a little funny, which would have me believe it's an earlier car. If they had the curved cowl figured out by the Reynolds car at #93, then maybe this is really one of the first Chevrolets… or maybe they butchered the cowl switching it to RHD, if that's what it is.
Posted By: Gunsmoke Re: old photo corner... - 03/19/14 12:57 PM
If we only had an insider with the Ohio DMV who could go back in the records of 1913 and plug in the license plate #, we would have an answer for sure. The details from the firewall back including RHD are still puzzling. I looked yesterday through many early British cars of the period and found nothing similar. Any Ohioans reading this?
Posted By: 41specialdeluxe Re: old photo corner... - 03/21/14 01:33 AM
Never mind asking the Ohioans anything. They visited Washington, DC and strolled in and out and all around the Lincoln Memorial for about a century without noticing the date on one side of it was the wrong one for the day that Ohio came into the union. Somewhat true but I'm just kidding. They are really sharp folks and the state is full of old car enthusiasts. dance Agrin

I think the post by Brewster of the 1913 Model C, Classic Six showing the Ohio plate is a fake. ref

I think the car has been superimposed and the license plate changed, the couples were standing next to a 1939 Roadster (Holden Body). the tree is obviously a coolabah and the pond sure looks like it may be a billabong. Yep! All that is missing is the jumbuck(sp) (whatever). The matilda is in the backseat or maybe one of the girl's name. Who knows? Don't make no difference to my theory.

This is something that is right down those wiley down-under's alley. Pulling the wool over our eyes.

I'll wager that Jack from Sydney australia sent this to Brewster canada and they are in on it together. newzealandToo! Notice how the down-under's haven't joined in with any comment about the car. None at all. That is only more proof that we patriot have done been had. Big time!

BTW: Prove me wrong. Seems to me that this is the only explanation for that car.

You may be onto something! My early ancestors (from 1785-1800)fled to Canada as British Empire Loyalists from Mass., Penn., Vermont, and New Hampshire following the American Revolution, and then some of them returned from Nova Scotia during the war of 1812 to burn down Washington. So you can fool with those Aussies, but don't mess with us Canucks eh!

A couple of the photos above appear in a book titled Chevrolet: The Coming of age, by Ray Miller and states the first PRODUCTION Chevrolet was built in November of 1911. The photo with the revised beltline and electric cowl lamps was listed as a second or third preproduction prototype built in 1911. There is a photo of the first production car and it has the round cowl lamps that are pedestal mounted. The photo is listed as being from the GMI Alumni Foundation's Collection. It also listed the total production of the Classic Six as 2999. I have no idea of the accuracy of the book, but it does make interesting reading and covers the years 1911-1942.
Posted By: ChevyGuru Re: old photo corner... - 03/22/14 02:34 AM
All the dates and production figures are totally wrong. Most of the early photos are also incorrectly identified, at least with respect to their dates.

These same errors appear in George Dammann's "60 Years of Chevrolet" (some, but not all, of them are corrected in his later "75 Years of Chevrolet") - and most all other published sources also, because they all went to Dammann's book to get the wrong information. It was published all completely wrong again just a couple of weeks ago in "Old Cars Weekly" little piece about the Model C.

First "production" Model C's were built in December 1912, as 1913 models. We estimate that 5 were built in December, and then increasing to less than a dozen a month, finally reaching about 25 a month by June of 1913. TOTAL production of the Model C was 402 units, ending in May 1914.

There is no such thing as ANY 1911 production. Then, ONLY LITTLES were sold as 1912 models - that's the car which had a production run of 2,999. That production began (slowly) in April of 1912. This LITTLE production run was confused with being the "first Chevrolet" (i.e. the Model C) decades ago; and appears all over the internet and in published sources incorrectly attributed to being the Model C.

It is possible/probable that the ONE early prototype C with Louis Chevrolet driving and the square gas cowl lights was built by late 1911. The other prototype with electric lights was certainly well into 1912, probably quite late in 1912.

See bottom of Page 22 continuing onto Page 23 of the March G&D for more detail.

Thank you VCCA members and Chevy fans!!! carbana

Tonight I am closing the "Old Photo Corner" to additional posts. Since August the 8th 2010 we've rolled up 625 posts and 218960 views. It has been a pleasure discussing, viewing, sharing and reminiscing with all of you so far. Thank you to those of you that have also taken the time to add to the posts with your comments, and especially those that have taken the time to post old photos. Many of the pictures that I post I "steal" from other sites on the internet (sorry H.A.M.B.!!), and I worry a bit that those of you that frequent those sites as well are not getting "fresh" material. Nothing pleases me more than checking out this thread and seeing that someone has posted a picture from their own personal collection, or their family's album. I think it's great that they get shared here first!

Our reason for taking a break is to help preserve this thread so we can all continue to enjoy enjoy it for a while to come. If any links ever break, we would hate to lose all of the pages, so we have decided it is better to isolate the thread after 25 pages.

So take a few minutes, run to the lobby for some snacks…
...then meet us back for the continuation of the thread in Old Photo Corner II
