I was asked recently what the "blue dot" tail light lenses seen on some Chevys are all about. I didn't know, so thought I would post the question here. I'm sure you guys know. Questions:

-- Were they ever an original (OEM) item?
-- When did they arrive as an accessory / aftermarket item?
-- Why blue and what is the point?
-- Why were/are they popular?

Thanks!

I believe blue dots originated in the late fifties as a novelty accessory.Never a factory installed item. The main reason they are used is:

1.Cool purple glow when you hit the brakes. That's why the blue color is used!

Unfortunately they are illeagl to use, but,I've never been stopped by a policeman because of them.

Most likely would get deductions when being judged, but,I don't care! cool

I remember seeing blue dots when I was a little kid back in the late '30's.
They are illeagal in most states and on most cars the brake lights barely show up in the day time when blue dots are used.

I have to agree as I am finishing up my 41 town sedan and went with the blue dots as I liked the looks, hope not to have problems if I do I will just remove them.

Come down to Texas and Oklahoma and check out all the "Blue Dots" When did they originate?
I've seen them on Model A's and 1940 Chevrolets and F0RDS.... They probably originated in California.

My memory tells me Blue Dots started showing up around 1950/51 or so. The idea was to move away from the plain old stock tail lights and have something a little different. They came along with the trend to remove chrome, door handles, put 49 Plymouth bumpers on your 35/36 ford coupe. A cheap means of "customizing". Blue dots are legal here on old cars, but in 1950 where I lived you would hear a siren real quick. talk

Don't drive in Miamisburg, Ohio with Blue Dots unless you want a ticket.
