When I was a pup my pappy brought home a slightly "used" 1939 Chevy Pick-up. Us kids loved to ride in the back. My mom made him get rid of it cause she felt that only poor people needed a truck in the driveway. Mom had been raised dirt-poor and didn't want any reminders.

Johhny, I have a 1948 2 ton 6400 5-window cab with a 2 speed rear end. Are both of your COE's 5-window cabs? The way my 1948 sales brochure reads, it sounds as if the COE came standard with the "nu vue" windows. Besides the COE, the only 5-window I've seen on a 1.5- 2 ton truck was on a 1948 2 ton at a truck show. Just wondering what others have observed.
Mine is a '55, 2nd seriers, 3/4 ton, long bed. Didn't have the orginal motor/tranny so it runs a built 350 with a T400.
My dream truck, I would like to have would be an early COE made into a car hauler for other chevys. Too cool.
Biggreen, I have seen very few of 5 window cab-over (COE's) in AD Chevy trucks.
Hi Guys! Like lil'johnny said, the old Junkyard Dog has an unusual COE. Actually, I have two COE's. One is a 1948 5 window with a 158" wheelbase, and the other is my unusual 1951 3 window with a 179" wheelbase. The '48 has no bed and it is all complete, but I keep it as a parts truck for "Diesel Dan" my 1951 COE. "Diesel Dan" is a slideback and he was converted way back in the early 1960's before there was actually such a thing. Before that he was a moving van (when new) and then a lumber yard delivery truck with rollers on the bed. "Diesel Dan" weights 9,000 pounds empty, and he has a backing alarm, back up light, fog lights, under the bed tool box, crane on the bed for lifting engines and such, a Tulsa 20,000 pound line pull winch, a CB with a PA horn on the outside of the cab and etc. If it needs to be pulled or hauled, "Diesel Dan" does the job. By the way, he does have a 1957 235 gasoline engine, but when he grows up he wants to be a diesel rig....hence the name "Diesel Dan". Anyone interested in buying these two COE's because the Junkyard Dog just might part with them! :eek:
I also have "Wimpy" a 1968 GMC 3/4 ton that I have been driving for 32 years now, and a 1972 fully loaded cream puff, low mileage Cheyenne 3/4 pick up that my dad bought brand new.
I've just bought a '71 Custom/10 swb stepside. It has a 307 V8 and 4 speed and a 3.08:1 axle. I call it a muscle truck because it doesn't have power steering, brakes, etc. It has leaf springs on the rear (how unusual is that?) and it rides like a brick. The steering column is not the same color as the truck, the steering wheel seems to be from a later model, and the turn signals cancel too soon, in other words, you don't have to turn the wheel very far in either direction to engage the cancel device. It will cancel just from getting into a turn lane and you have to click them on again. Does anyone have any idea what parts might have been changed?
Yes, I agree the 5-window in a larger truck is very uncommon. My truck came with no radio or heater and only came with the "deluxe" window trim. Maybe the 5-window being standard in the COE cab is a 1948 thing. The 1948 brochure makes it sound so. Straight from the horse's mouth it reads: "Rear corner windows on cab-over-engine models eliminate blind spots, increase visibility in turning and backing. (Optional at extra cost on conventional trucks.)" So does this sound like its standard on COE's OR is a no cost option for COE's? Just curious.

d2d2,The directional signal canceling cam is incorrect for the directional switch in the column.The cam is cup like and is fastened to the back of the steering wheel with two screws.It may be plastic or metal.There is cut out in the side that contacts the "dogs" in the switch whem the lever is moved and this is what cancels the signal.The cam is what needs to be changed to one that is correct for the signal switch OR if the column is the correct year the steering wheel cam is not for a 71.Is that as clear as mud?????
Thanks guys, it makes sense that it's a different steering wheel, probably for a truck with power steering, nice wheel too so it's good to know I could just change the cam.
As my handle suggests, I have a 1966 Chevy pickup. It is a shortbed stepside. Stock so far, with newer wheels and tires. 250 six cylinder, three on the column.

Great posting guys, but why does everyone have "newer" trucks? Or am I just trapped in the 30s? My ole chevys are a 29, 31, 32, 33, 34 1-1/2 tons, from one restored, several under restoration, to assorted parts and pieces. Also in my misguided lust for big trucks I have somehow "attracted" a 36 IH 2 ton 172" wheelbase that I want to make into a motorhome(will have a 454 and turbo 400)this one was from a shirtsleeve relative. I also have somehow accumulated a few F%#@s as well, an early 30 AA (uses the 28/29 cab and needs both doors) a 31 AA 157wb (for sale) a 33 135" wb BB that will be used as a dump truck here at ALMOSTA Ranch, and just got a 41 Ford COE with 22,000 original miles, it still has 4 of the original "Ford" script tires on it!!!!
Now these Fords I own somehow noticed my accumulation of ole chevs, became esceedingly jealous, and decided to temp me with good deals so I would give them a home also....Part of the deal is that they must be used to haul good ole chevy parts around of they couldn't come here to live. Really guys I promise!!!!

Well,,i have a 50 chev 1/2 ton,bought it for $600.00 in 1990,,,,the funny thing about is i got it on the 14th of october(my ma & dad's wedding aniversary,right to the day,,,and they were married on oct14th 1950,,,and on the radiator is stamped 10-50,,,that's when they were married,,,So is that wierd or what,,,Can't hardly sell that truck....
Sounds like you have 8 years to fix it up and give it to them on their 60th. Although, their 50th would have had more meaning in hindsight.
p.s. I turned 13 on Friday the 13th. Talk about weird and yes, my mom locked the keys in the car.
JYD, Man-o-man, that sounds like my kind of truck, red white and blue with a nice earth toned red oxide over cast, I can't wait to show it to my 57 C6500 flat bed peanut wagon . It is all original Forest Green with a lot of brown and reddish brown tones and lots of oil and grease mixed with red Texas sand on the undercarriage, and with the doors in my shop in a nice gray primer, and an original 261 with a two speed rear, and a 4th direct tranny. Mrs Mack was flabbergasted that I built a $15,000 insulated metal building to keep it in, but came around to my way of thinking when I told her She can ride in front with old Rex our puppy and me! Yeah, life don't get any better than this!
Cool! Sounds like you have my kind of truck too. However, old "Diesel Dan" wouldn't know what to do if he was inside since he is strictly an outside truck, and he loves sitting under the old oak tree.....year after year after year. But, a couple of turns of the crank and he starts right up and away he goes. Ugliest truck on the road! Even the professional trucker dudes take a second look at him when he goes by, because they can't believe that GM made a truck that ugly! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:
Well old "Gooberbelle is inside because he don't have his doors on and he got a brand new seat and floormat. He is going back out soon as I get the doors back together, really got ripped off by a local auto glass A.Hole, they gave me a price of 150 for cutting 2 vents and 2 side windows and then presented me a bill for $300 after loseing my good vent window and breaking spot welds on the rollup window frames. they used for a "pattern" Never the less when I started to hammer off my frames they came down to $180, but never came up with my "pattern"
