Help - My 1928 truck will start and run with the choke, when I try to un-choke it will run rough and want to quit, I pull the choke and it will run again. As it warms up then of course it don't want to run good with the choke and when I release the choke it makes a lot of popping and as it gets warmer it will also backfire. I had problems with it in 2012 and then parked it for 4 years, trying to resurrect it again.

Suspect some buildup from polymerized gasoline and possibly corrosion from water. I had some severe problems recently with my '28 Coupe that has been on VCCA tours a couple of times per year. Always ran great until had a gas tank problem on last year's VCCA 4-cylinder tour. Stored it 'til this spring. When went to prepare it for VCCA Mid-America Tour, wouldn't stay running without choke.

Turned out to have water corrosion in carburetor, multiple rust holes in vacuum tank and stuff in gas tank. Replaced gas tank and vacuum fuel pump and rebuilt the carburetor. Ran great on the tour. Now to Montana for the VCCA 4-cylinder tour.

I agree with all that Chipper says. You say that it hasn't run for four years. I hadn't started my 28 for a year and it did all that yours is doing. First thing dismantle and thoroughly clean the carburetor. Second thing fill the vacuum tank with fresh fuel.

Agreed, you are too lean so start with a clean carb and go from there. Make sure you have newer clean fuel and that there is enough getting to the carb for the engines needs.

Could also be vacuum leaks. Worn throttle shaft, carb to manifold, manifold to head. Any air leaks will cause the engine to run lean, running with the choke enriches the mixture.
