Good news. It appears that the dates for the 2003 Central Meet are:

July 16-20th, 2003. The location is Chilicothe, OH.

Gee Gerald, did you go to the right place? I just looked in my registration booklet from last years 39th Central Meet in Mattoon, Illinois and counted 156 names and 92 vehicles registered.

The judging is occurring now. We've had a great turn out. Close to 100 cars are our including many from the mid seventies. It's really nice to see the cars which have only recently been admitted into judging to show up on the field.

Hospitality night was pleasant. Saw many old faces. If anything exciting happens, I'll report!

Ahhhhhhhhhh....The show went great. We even had a discussion about technology & the club. Many there expressed the same sentiments you all have about where you'd like to see the club progress.

Today's tour to the Portsmouth levy was interesting. Following a devastating flood in 1937 they built some levies to stop the Ohio River from flooding. Several years ago the town decided to do something creative with the concrete walls and after 10 years of work there exist many beautiful murals along the entire length of the walls. Something worth seeing.

Then on the way back to the hotel, we stopped by 38 year member Carroll Hook's private collection of COOOOOL Chevrolet stuff. What a treat!

I returned home yesterday from the 40th Annual Central Meet. The meet was a great success and the First Capitol Region did a great job with the event and I had a great time.

Don William's 1925 Roadster (Featured vehicle in the July 2003 G & D) is every bit as nice as it appears on the cover of the G & D. So nice that he was awarded "Best of Show", Four cylinder, and he had some stiff competition with the likes of Bob Sovis's 1919 Sedan, Jim Hickman's 1920 FB Sedan and Wally Deck's 1928 Coupe (Best of Show - Four Cylinder - 40TH Anniversary Meet). Congratulations Don, In my opinion, the judges were right and yours was truly the best 4 cylinder on the field.

A 1930 Phaeton, belonging to Lloyd Henige out of Michigan, was "Best of Show - 6 Cylinder", a 1958 Corvette, belonging to Bob Gardner out of Michigan, was "Best of Show - V8", and a "Drop Dead", Gorgeous Black and Silver 1958 1/2 ton Cameo, belonging to Jake Andrews from Ohio, was "Best of Show - Commercial". The '58 Cameo was rumored to have been sold for 80k during the event.

There were approximately 100 vehicles on the judging field and all were worthy of being there. Some times you go to a meet and look at the vehicles on the field and you see some that you question why they are there. Every vehicle that I saw was worthy of being there and that made the event for me.

Your last statement, Oldie, is one that has been brought up and discussed before in past discussions. There are some, self included, that have rolling "projects in progess" and have wondered aloud in these forums if it is appropriate to show up at events. The general consensus was that those with PIPs may likely be newcomers and/or new members who are just getting started, and are welcome and encouraged to show up as non-judged cars.

Your sentiment is well taken, because anyone would want to be sure it's worthwhile to go to an event if it's a long trip.

First I don't intend my comments as a personal attack or critism only a different prospective. It is my opinion and the right of every member in good standing of the VCCA that every meet registered vehicle can be displayed on the show field. To try to enforce a vehicle standard is such a can of worms that I am sure we do not want to go there. I sure appreciate seeing the over restored "show" quality Chevrolets that receive the major awarsd and also enjoy the older restorations and more "original" cars and trucks. No matter the condition I almost always learn something from every vehicle on the field. As you know I am not a "hot rod" or modified advocate but will defend the owner of such a Chevrolet if he displays it on the show field. I believe that even the touring vehicles should be as original as possible. Yes I am a bit hypocritical as my '28 Canopy Express has numerous modifications. My defense is that I bought it that way and I am too frugal to change it.

After re-reading my statement, "sometimes you go to a meet and - ", I wish I could delete it because it wasn't interpretated as I intended it to have been and I apologize to those that may have been offended. A better statement would have been, "every car there was a nice car and worthy of being there". Another example of how the written word can be interpretated different ways by different people. And Chip, the judging field did in fact have at least one and maybe other modified vehicles on it, something that I didn't say anything about and hadn't crossed my mind until you mentioned it.

Earlier I was entering a lengthy responce to Ed's entry about bringing "Projects in Progress" to events where I expressing my opinion that his suggestion was a good one and would be beneficial to others as well as the owner. That response was lost before it was posted because of an interuption by my Internet Provider. In the interium, Chip's response was entered. Had that entry been posted, I believe it would have been clear that there was no malice intended in my earlier statement.

Ahh, jeez, no - far from looking for an apology, I was considering that new members (or yet-to-be members) might interpret it on face value, so I thought it was appropriate just to provide some context.

Obviously it can be quite intimidating, at face value, to drive in your project car with the faded paint and the droopy interior and park it next to a show quality car. I didn't think you were really putting down that kind of situation. Your follow up filled in what you meant and explained it better. Chipper's thoughts helped provide some balance on the subject, too.

However, I will go along with anyone who questions the sanity of someone who drags in some rusted up, blown out POS (and I don't mean "Project On Show" ) into the car corral and slaps a $3895 price tag on it.
