I've found a reproduction Delco lead/acid battery for my 55 Belair. It looks like a 55 battery...says Delco on front and has yellow caps. My car will show better with this under the hood. However, a friend said these batteries have a history of blowing up. Anyone know about this?

The 1955 battery had black caps with a thin yellow ring around the out side. Said Delco but lettering was black like the rest of the battery. The 1956 and up had solid yellow caps.
Any battery can blow up under certain conditions.
The are three pictues of the 1955 battery installed in a 1955 in the book "Chevrolet History-1955-1956".

Thanks Gene, a dry cell type battery with black caps and yellow rings was in the trunk of the car when I bought it. It would not hold a charge, so I bought a sealed battery with a flat top and a plastic top that looked like a tar top. It had yellow caps, so I took the black caps off the dry cell and glued them to the fake tar top. Now I have a sealed battery that looks a lot like a 55 battery.
