Apologies for being away so long, been tasked into another project. Anyway, I've just fitted the rebuilt engine into my '31 Coach. While at it I had the clutch disk refaced. Problem is it won't fully disengage. Aside from the obvious 'it must be too thick' answer I've noticed the the pressure plate (with which the throwout bearing engages) only has 1/4" movement before it bottoms out and the springs and clutch plate barely move 1/16". Is this normal?

How much free play is at the pedal pad?

I had a similar problem wit my 32 and after all adjusting without improvement I ended up putting a spacer washer under the cover mounting to move it out. Not a proper correction but it works and when the disc wears enough I can remove them without pulling the transmission.

Steve, your solution sounds interesting. However, I'm not sure where you're putting this washer. Are you talking about spacing out the clutch plate?

Papa: Did you adjust your bolt that holds the ball joint on the arm that holds the donut? That gives more release to the pressure plate. You can do this , just take the pan off the bottom. Then be sure your clutch peddle has 1" free play when out.

If you unscrew the ball joint of the clutch fork, be sure to support the threaded part under the ball with a nut or a thick washer.

The washer is under the pressure plate @ the mounting bolt. It spaces the plate back the distance equal to the thickness of the washer. I used a stainless plain flat washer and it was standard thickness. This was the second time I had this problem and the first time I re-installed a used disc, but that required removing the transmission. Both times were after an engine out of chassis rebuild and pulling the tranny once more was not something that I wanted to do.
