I am getting ready to purchase parts to overhaul my 1954 235 engine. I am looking for recommendations for parts MANUFACTURERS as it's been a long time since I have sourced major parts and there are a lot of names I do not recognize. The pricing varies greatly also. While I do wish to save money I want quality parts. The items I will need are an overhaul gasket set, main and rod bearings, camshaft and followers, water pump, ring sets, and timing gears. Sealed Power is one of the names I am familiar with and have pricing for, though it varies with vendors. Some I am not are Airtec, Cardone, and Engine Tech. I appreciate any feedback.

Finding individual PARTS MANUFACTURERS could be quite a job. I used a middle man for mine. Kanter https://www.kanter.com was my choice 4-5 years ago. They have an on-line web site which could provide you a package price for all your needs. The web site would at least be good for comparison shopping and making sure you have not forgotten anything. Chevs of the 40's also has package pricing.

The problem I had with Kanter is my machine shop did not actually begin working on my rebuild for 6 months or more after I had got them the parts. At that time they found the push rods to be too long and the lifter springs too weak, and Kanter would not let me exchange them. So double check parts quality ASAP.

You could let your machine shop handle the parts order but I thought they would mark up the prices. I used the Carquest regional machine shop for my rebuild. It took about a year for them to finish the job as they did the work around other jobs.

Good luck, Mike

I purchased NOS & NORS parts from E-bay & from members here at a huge saving but you might want to check with the shop that's doing the work. They might want to get their own parts. It's like taking your ham & eggs to a restaurant & asking them to cook them for you....Joe

Yes, would be best to have the shop doing the work to supply the parts. That way if there is a problem they have to take care of it. May cost more but save in a long run. Also they should know what parts brands they have good luck with.

I should add if the camshaft and bottom of the lifters look OK and would reuse it ratrher than take a chance with a "new" cam of questionable quality. Also put the lifters back in the same "holes".
Is it a stick or PG block?

I agree on purchasing the parts from the shop that is doing the work. In my case other than machine work I am installing most parts. Today I will take the block to be checked and "baked". I will have the machine shop that is doing that supply/install the cam bearings, and deck the block, head, and manifolds. Rock Auto seems to be the least expensive for most items by at least 10% and some items over 30% and that's comparing identical vendor items. I am familiar with sealed power and will try to use their products for most items. Thanks for the feedback as it certainly helps.

The engine is a stick and one lobe on the cam is starting to crown or round off. The lifters are a little pitted also. A sealed power cam and lifters is around $350.00 by purchasing from two vendors. Patricks has a cam and lifters for around $220.00 but I have not confirmed who the vendor is. Getting the cam and lifters from the same vendor/mfg. is how I will go.

I have had several reports from others that had the same problem with Kanter. Kanter's parts were either inferior quality or the parts were wrong, and Kanter would not do anything about the issues.

i spoke with the folks at Patricks and they said the cams and followers are made in the USA. Basically they said that only one company in the USA is making the forging and they are then shipped to various shops for grinding. Theirs are ground in Michigan. I dropped the block, pan, cyl.head, valve cover and rocker assemblies off at the machine shop this AM so if everything looks good I will be able to start ordering parts shortly.

That is the question I will ask before ordering. The conversation was pretty much one way when I was talking to them and I did not have the time to wait for a response for a second question. Will advise when and IF I do order from them.

If you spoke with "Patrick", he has much to say.

I have spoken with him before but it was his son who I talked to. The apple did not fall far. My great grand daughter came in while I was on the phone with him and she was not feeling well, otherwise I would have dug a little deeper. Just waiting for report from the machine shop on the block before I do anything other than clean parts. The good news is that no one has been inside this engine before.

I have three pistons cleaned so far and they are good. Should have the others cleaned by Friday but they look OK right now. I will let you know if I find anything different.
