Hello all,

My father bought a 46 stylemaster last February and we are having issues with the electrical system. I bought a brand new battery for it a couple of weeks ago. It died on us at a red light a couple of days ago. Recharged the battery, installed it, fired right up, I left it running for over an hour. It was starting to sputter but I just gave up. After I turned it off I tried starting it again and as expected there isn't enough juice for the starter. Second try the stater doesn't even engage. Voltage is at 6.2V now. While I ran it for over an hour I noticed that the charging gauge is barely over the middle dot. Revving the engine moves it a mm at most. Turning on the lights will make the needle shoot to the left and stay there. I own a voltmeter and can borrow other tools if needed. Where and how should I diagnose the system?

Sounds like you might have a problem with your generator output. Check the voltage on the generator when the car is running to see what the generator output is. Also, you can test the voltage regulator as well to see if it is defective. Refer to your 1946 shop manual for the instructions on how to test the voltage regulator.
