I will offer a few corrections to the information from the G&D article. One number listed for the 1930-31 heads is the part number and the other is the casting number. I don't have a parts book handy to be sure which is which. The 1930 block casting number is: 835501 and not the same as 1931! This is a mistake repeated numerous times.

When I get home with my records I will send some corrections. My memory is like a steel trap. Unfortuately I forgot how to open it.

Boy, What a welt of information and I used it a few times already. Just a little request, would it be too much trouble when you go from say like PULLEY to OIL PUMP they would be in BOLD PRINT so they are easier to pick up? I'm not lazy but I think it would do us a great service. dance Thanks

Just looked up the casting numbers on the 3 blocks I'm taking in to get boiled out and fluxed. #835503 is for the '29 & #'s 836273 & 836275 is correct for a '30 or my '31. This was taken from d2d2's posting. Am I correct? Chipper's posting just above sounds a little differnt. Maybe I'm missing something. Oh yes, that BOLD type sure helps. Thanks,
jerrygolf

That is incorrect! As stated by Chipper Dipper the casting numbers listed in the G&D article above are also incorrect.

The block casting number for both 1929 and 1930 is 835501. The block casting number for 1931 is 836409 (see d2d2's first posting on March 02, 2004 22:09).

"836273" is the casting number for a 1930-31 cylinder head and "836275" is the Chevrolet part number for that same 1930-31 cylinder head.

Still a little confused. The #835503 & #836273 are located to the front of the head with a bow tie emblem above it and no number to the rear & the #836275 is located to the rear of the head and no bow tie & no number to the front. It also has MC 603 on it. Will clean them up more tonight and have another look. There are some other numbers on them but quite different. Hate to spend money on the #836275 if it some type of different head. Will report back later.

In your posting of November 17, 2005 20:19, you stated "Just looked up the casting numbers on the 3 blocks I'm taking in to get boiled out".

From that posting you led us to believe that you were talking about engine BLOCK casting numbers. As stated previously the BLOCK casting number for the 1929 and 1930 cylinder block is 835501. The BLOCK casting number for 1931 is 836409.

The CYLINDER HEADS used different casting numbers. For 1929 the casting number on the CYLINDER HEAD is 835503 and the Chevrolet part number for that cylinder head is 835674. Both 1930 and 1931 used the same cylinder head so the casting number for the CYLINDER HEAD for that application is 836273. The Chevrolet part number for that CYLINDER HEAD is 836275.

Hope this helps to clear up the confusion. Good luck with your project too!

JYD,
Your right, I should of used the block on MY shoulders when I entered Block instead of Head in my Nov. 17th post. :o flush Thanks for catching that. I just cleaned them off the best I could and here'e what I found:
>HEAD #1 - Towards the front is a bowtie then 14, underneath that is 835503, then center bottom is CONV-13 on a little tag and then 120 on a little tag.
>HEAD #2 - Towards the front is a bowtie then 16, underneath that is 836273, then center bottom is CONV-12 on a little tag and then C21 on a little tag.
>HEAD #3 - In the middle of the HEAD is MC 603, under that is 11-4 on a tag, then a little further back even with the MC 603 is a U, then to the back is 836275.
Those are the only numbers I could find. Would head #2 be a '31 with the casting number only and Head #3 be a '31 with the part number only? They sure look alike. Note, HEAD #3 does not have a bowtie on it.
>My BLOCK number is 836409 so I'm OK there for my '31.
Hope I don't confuse anyone too much stressed
I'm heading for the Cities tomorrow morning and will be back Sunday evening. One of my boys has Open House at a new plant they just built where he works.

Head number one is for 1929.

Head number two is for 1930-31.

Head number three is also for 1930-31 and it apparently is a replacement.

Thank you for all of the work and effort and time you put into this for us d2d2.

I copied all of it to Word and then made another copy with just '32 information on it, will be very helpful during the restoration.

Thanks again and thanks to those who helped with it also.

The G&D block casting numbers for 1935 & 1936 should not be the same as 35 had only the top of the cylinders covered with a water jacket and the 36 block had full cylinder water jackets. The casting # on the 35 block is 837591. The casting # on the 36 block is 836010. Hope this helps.

34 & 35 trucks are the greatest. 36 high cabs are OK too.

That often confuses people. They look in a later parts book that was issued after the 1935 engine was discontinued and the 1936 was used for replacement. The book shows the 1935 and 1936 block casting number as 836010, which was the number for the 1936 block only when the cars were new.
This also happened for 1937-38-39 and again for the 216 for 1941,47,48, and 1952(all years changes were made.

I have a question on a head casting #.

I pulled a head off a 1954 235.
It had full pressure oiling & the 216 style water pump , solid lifters & had the car motor mounting pads up front.

The head casting # is 3836848.
All the listings I can find i.d. this head as a 1956 head.

I was under the impression that the 1953 powerglide & the 1954 235 full pressure heads were not interchangable with the later '55-'62 235 heads.

Could someone have gotten away with installing a '55-'62 head on a 1954 block ?
