Just curious:
Does a car have to run (operate) well to be judged higher points?

Are any points given for parts that "work" on the the car versus parts that "look" correct but don't function?

To be judged a vehicle must be submitted to a Field Entrance Check Team.

Quote
The vehicle to be checked must drive up to the field team, leave the check area, and drive on to the judging field under the vehicle's own power.
So says the blue judging manual.

The field entrance check is intended to check the function of the operating systems including drive train, service and parking brakes, lights, horn, windows, radio, clock, heater motor, air conditioning, wipers (not washers but they must be visably complete and appear functional), other accessories (electric seat, power top, etc.). It is impractical and could be a safety hazard to people and other vehicles to have these checks made on the judging field. Also the meet photo location is normally not on the judging field and the vehicle needs to get its photo taken.

Is it possible to replace operational replacement parts with non-operational original parts on the judging field. You bet! And it happens. I have replaced non-original parts with operational original parts on the judging field. Because some original parts are hard to find, deteriorate quickly, etc. I prefer to take them off for tours and other driving. I also think it is better to display the vehicle with as many original parts as possible. So I use original 70 year old spark plug wires, coil, correct oxblood "Delco" distributor cap, a NOS radiator cap on the '31 Fire truck. Has it ever mattered as far as the points are concerned? I doubt it as it has not had direct competetion except once. Since it is not a preservation vehicle it doesn't matter for the points but I still do it. I even just cleaned and polished the instruments so the original finish could be seen. It is not perfect but looks good and it is original. I do it so people can see the original parts. I have never had anyone comment on the fact that it has the original parts on it. Do they not care? or don't know the originals when they see them? I think the latter is more likely.
Sorry I got carried away.
