I found this very interesting. I don't own a car new enough to have a large concern but some of you might. Worth the read.

it isn't just your car, if it is smart it is a spy! TV's, refigerators, thermostats, Alexia! you name it. Watch out for tictok also. Your only true security is your own knowledge and diligence.

I have seen this for some time. I was surprised more people had not realized this. If they can send updates to your car via satellites what is stopping them from retrieving information. My vehicles are all to old to worry about this but eventually I will have to replace my daily driver and this will be a concern.

My main issue currently is going to the parts counter and hearing they have not made that part in a while.

I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

The unfortunate reality is that I have had to adopt the mindset that there is no such thing as privacy or data security these days. All I can do is be ready to deal with the consequences.

With respect to our vehicles “tattling” on us, these recent articles do not reveal the full extent of data that is available. Even before many people were using active communication links to their vehicles, there were and are still data recorders on our vehicles. They capture data about things such as speed, seat belt usage, number of occupants, and throttle and brake position. The data is recorded on a continuous loop for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. If there is a catastrophic event such as an accident, the recording stops. Investigators can then retrieve the data to help reconstruct the incident. Insurance companies use this to determine who was at fault.

Yes, we are living in 1984!
