With the new "open drive line" introduced in 1955, Chevrolet started offering the Borg Warner R-10 overdrive in passenger cars and light trucks. Chevrolet was the only GM product line that featured this option. Borg Warner made between 7 and 8 million of these units that were sold to 22 different car manufactures. Borg Warner would mate their R-10 directly to the manufacturers 3 speed manual transmissions. While many internal parts are similar, the R-10 cases were unique to the manufacturers specs. There was also a R-11 that had 4 planetary gears for heavier duty applications.

Chevrolet never offered with high performence engines or big block cars but was available on smaller trucks ith 3 speeds. I converted my 1957 245 HP to overdrive and the 4,11 diff. and was the best combination for power and economy I ever had in my cars.
