I have a 12 volt timing light that I am trying to use on a 6 volt vehicle (1939 chevy). I have old eyes and the light isn't bright enough. Can I hook the timing light to an external 12 volt Battery, and hook the lead up to the number one spark plug?

Yes. That is the way I used my 12 volt light on my 6 volt ‘37.
The inductive lead that clamps around the #1 spark plug wire sends a signal to the light to make it flash. the flashing light requires 12 volts but the inductive wire does not.

Agreed... i used my 12v lawn tractor battery for my timing light. works great. I also do a connection from battery to chassis to be safe, ground it

You must connect the 6V battery (chassis) ground to the 12V battery ground else the timing light will likely have issues. I cooked a 12V light by using the battery from my riding mower and not connecting the grounds.

Maybe I just got lucky but my cheap wally world special light works fine on 6v but I rarely use it any more. Since the timing on these was set for low octane gas I don't mess with it. I set to fastest/smoothest idle and lock it down, way advanced from factory spec. I've not yet had to back it off due to pinging or starter dragging.
