PROBLEM: HEADLIGHTS WON'T TURN ON.
TROUBLE SHOOTING ACTION:
1. CHECKED FOR POWER AT SWITCH. RESULT: O.K.
2. CHECKED FUSE ON SWITCH. RESULT: O.K.
3. WITH SWITCH IN 1ST POSITION: COWL LIGHTS ON
4. WITH SWITCH IN 2ND POSITION: HEAD LIGHTS DO NOT TURN ON.

CONSLUSION: 2ND POSITION CONTACTS IN SWITH ARE BAD.
REMEDY: NEW SWITCH

CAN ANYBODY SUGGEST A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE I HAVEN'T COVERED? IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN CHECK OR LOOK FOR BEFORE I BUY A NEW SWITCH?

AS ALWAYS, THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR THE HELP.

turn the plug at the backside of the headlite bucket counterclockwise to remove the plug from the headlite bucket, then turn on headlite switch and see, with a multimeter, if you are getting current to the metal studs in the bakelite piece at the end of the headlite harness you just unpluged from the headlite buicket. if you have electrons making it to the studs in the bakelite, the problem is in the wiring assembly within the headlite buckets. good luck, mike

You can also use a continuity tester to see if you have juice to the headlight terminal on the back of the light switch. If you do have continuity there, then check continuity to the headlight dimmer switch as well.

Also, if you do determine that the problem is definitely in the headlight switch, refrain from buying another switch since 9 times out of 10 those headlight switches can be repaired.

Good poop! Thanks guys. I would rather fix it myself than have to buy another one. What about leaving the pulb socket in the headlight bucket and with a meter, turn the lights on to see if i'm getting juice at the bulb socket?

I checked the battery lead at the light switch andIi have juice there and the cowl lights turn on o.k. That's why I suspect the contacts for the headlights.

Do you have continuity at the headlight terminal on the back of the light switch when the switch is in the headlight position??

No juice at headlight position on switch. If it is the contacts on the switch, can it be taken apart and the contacts burnished?

Sure, and if you have a bead blaster, that even works better when cleaning the inside contacts.
