The generator on my 36 GMC 1/2 ton is overcharging the 8v that I have. I am going to replace the battery with a 6v. However I have reduced the output to 8.5 to 9.5 and it still is overcharging the battery. Amps are at 7 with no load and go to -10 with the headlights on. The only regulation is a third brush on the generator and a cutout switch on the generator. What next?

I assume that the numbers you are giving refer to amps. The generator-depending what GMC used, will always be putting out 15 to 20 amps at mid-speed.less or none at idle and will drop back at high speed. If the system is as some Chevrolet cars have there may be a resistor on the light switch that increases the amp out put when the lights are on.The constant charging will not harm the battery.I have driven my car on trips of hundreds of miles with no problem.Battery usually lasts 7 to 8 years.Important to check water level though.

So with no load the ammeter may show around 15 amps charge (a little higher when gen. is cold) and should be about in the center to a slight charging position with lights on.This is with the standard bulbs in the headlights and tail lights with one or two original size bulbs.
