I have a Delco Remy starter that came on a 35 Chevrolet engine I purchased. The starter bears the Model Number 714L. Can anyone tell me where this starter was originally used?

This leads me to my second question: I see that in Tech Talk, engine and transmission component casting and part numbers have been listed - I very nice resource! Do you experts also have such compilations for other components - such as electrical components? dance

714L is a 1934 Standard Starter.738G fits 1935-36 Masters.(and Standards)

The experts will need to answer the second half. stressed

ChevGene or anyone
Is there any reason why a 34 Standard starter will be inadequate for a 35 Master engine? I note that the compression ratio for the 35s are 5.6:1 whereas for the 34 Standard the CR is 5.35:1, making the 35s somewhat harder to crank. Sometime I will seek out a 738G starter but for now I would like to use the 714L as I just went through it with new brushes, some rewiring and confirmed bearings ok. :(

I was under the impression that a 1929-34 ('34 Standard only) starter would not bolt up to a '35 engine. At one time I had given my spare '34 Master starter to a friend to use on his '31 and it would not fit.
The main difference is the armature, bendix drive and bendix drive housing. The Bendix drive gear has 9 teeth on the later starter - 10 on the early--flywheel has only 104 teeth on the early......have you attempted to bolt the starter up to the '35 Master engine?---and will the starter gear engage with the flywheel properly?

The starter was on the engine when I purchased the engine. It had (reportedly) been a running engine. It does bolt up. I will count the teeth on the starter. The teeth on the starter are in good shape. The teeth on the flywheel are in pretty good shape - each tooth being a a little banged up - look normal to me. Could the armature and drive from a later starter have been installed in a 714L case, i.e., would it fit and have the armature align with the field ok? I guess I will have to get a battery and see if it will crank.

Starter gear has 9 teeth. Difficult to count the ring gear teeth but I will try tomorrow.

The outter starter housing (case) was never serviced by Chevrolet so I have no info as to if it could be used on both early and late models. Many of the parts are the same including the fields..I don't know if the drive housing has a casting number but believe its a little longer on the 1934-36 Masters and 35-36 Standards. Can't get at mine to measure it at this time.---my guess is that you have a 1934 Std. starter housing (case) and the remainder of the parts are correct for 1935.
