brjr51,I have looked thru all of my info. and can find no specs for any 6 volt coil. The best I can come up with is "replace defective coil". That is what was usually done>>try a new one,if it starts and runs it was the coil. Not very technial but????

I agree with chevynut, if it works it is okay if it does not work replace it. I recently purchased a new coil, as I thought it was about time to replace the old one (no idea how long it had been on the car) worked fine for a short time and then started having ignition problems, did a complete tune up with all new parts except the coil and no improvement, noted a small wet spot on the downside of the new coil, pulled it and replaced it with the old one all is now well again. talk talk talk

Thanks guys, all I could find in all my manuals and tech sheets also was replace if defective. The coil seems to work fine, it's just probably the original 52 year old one.( Has the entire part #1115380 stamped on it. Not like the later replacements that had 380 6V stamped on em.) Bob

I'm not so sure that all original factory coils had the 1115380 number on them. This reminds me of some thing happened at the dealership I worked at.A wierd guy purchased a new 1952 Chev. from us.It was customary in those days to come back at 1000 miles for the inspection and note any problems you were having. This car was back in a few days with a list of things that you would not believe. One item is that the number on the coil was not 1115380 and he was unhappy because thats was not the number in the parts book. The service manager took him out to several other new cars and showed him that they all had the same number as his........I just went out and checked the coil number on my low milage '50 and found none.Guess that I'll be installing the new correct one thats in the trunk now. Also when these cars were new it was common to find the lower part of the coil wet with oil. Most seeped between the metal housing and the baklite. How many are still out there and did they ever go empty?By the mid 50's they got smart and mounted the coil "up-side down" to keep from leaking, also helped to keep wire from falling out.

Yeah Gene, never could understand why they mounted the coils with the high tension lead down unless they figured there was less chance of getting water in the coil. Both my 50 and 51 had the full part # on the coil. My 50 is a 66,000 mile with one owner up till Nov.2000 and everything loked orig. under the hood so I assume the coil had never been changed out unless it was done when the vehicle was only a few years old. My original 32 six volt coil went out while on tour in July and now I have a new delco coil in the car. I have heard that somebody has gutted out the original coils and rebuilt them with newer parts inside, But have not been able to find out who may be doing that. If anybody knows, please let me know. Thanks :) :) :) chevy chevy :) :) :)

Yeah, but you will have a hard time finding a place to park! and you will need a long trailer! to haul the extra parts for the back-up car!

I have all the readings written down somewhere for several coils, an original 28 coil with the resistor and built in condenser. also several delco coils from one with the oxblood material ( it was on the 28 when I bought it and still is) several from 49 51 53 and 55 and 57 trucks also a couple of spares I bought from NAPA, but when I suspect a bad coil I just replace it anyway!

I just replaced the coil in my 40 Master Deluxe with a 6 volt coil for an International Harvestor tractor. It works just fine and at only $18.00 was a heck of a lot cheaper than from chevs of the 40's, Idas, etc. Oh yes, and I also mounted it upside down. Seemed more logical to me.

I carry a new coil and other ignition parts in the trunk of my 38 Master. I would be hesitant to use a NOS coil from the 30s or 40s, age, corrosion etc. Mac

After spending lots of $$$ buying "NOS" coils in sealed boxes to rectify a problem with starting a warm engine in hot weather, I gave up and bought a modern 6v coil - problem solved!! Coils can go bad just sitting around for 40 or 50 years. I guess the money spent on the NOS coils didn't bother me as much as having my traveling companions automatically line up behind my car to push start it whenever we stopped for gas. :o :o :o

I know this is a bit off topic, but I jus' had another Senior Moment, and need some thearapy....

Yeah, Bob , but after a while you get a "Rep" and I think even the best of our fellow members tend to not let your forget!,

I just hold my foot on the brake till I am ready to move then Yell "OK , PUSH!" and off we go!

I just dread the day when no one is in the car and off it goes with 4 or 5 Chevy guys pushing it along.

I think we need a couple of:

" Rules of conduct for touring old Chevrolets."

One rule would be that you never pass by one of your comrades that has a tow rope tied to the front of their car and is waveing everyone over.

Another is to not push someone's car that is hollowerin'..." Whoa! I am just looking at my map! or I just dropped my Twinkie and can't find it!...."

yipp

Anyone else have some suggestions?
