Several years ago I had a 6 volt starter rebuilt with high torque field coils. These coils are no longer available locally. I would like to have my 42 Chev starter rebuilt with these high torque coils. Anyone out there know where these coils can still be purchased? They are a great solution for an engine that is hard to turn over when warm.

I believe that I have found some. I called some of the outfits that advertise in Hemmings. One of them says that they have them and are shipping me one set. I'll update this string when I find out for sure.

The 1953 parts book shows the same two field starters with all parts being the same from 1949-53.,,The 1957 book lists different field coils for 1950-54 Power Glides and Corvettes. In that book the price for the P.G. fields was $4.65 for the uppers and the same for the lowers. The stick shift fields were only $2.70 each. The 1957 book also lists a different starter for he 1950-54 P.G. cars.Part #1108035 on plate VS part #1107075 on stick starter. Also price was $46.00 for PG and $37.50 for stick. Will do more research.

Thanks to a Delco catalog I have learned the following. The factory high torque starter was used in 1954 and only on the Power Glides. It was a four field starter and the number on the plate riveted onto the starter is 1108035.The Chevrolet lists it as a new replacement starter for 50-54 PGs as it would have been an upgrade on the older years. This starter will fit all 1949 thru 54 passenger cars.Should be a help for those slow turning problems.Of course all cables. connections etc. must be up to par.

I promised an update on the high torque field coils when I installed the starter. Well, I finally installed it and was successful beyond any expectation on my part. I also replaced the #2 cables with #2/0 cables that I had made at a tractor battery place. I also polished the frame real well where the ground cables connects. All these probably contributed to the success that I have had with this change. The engine turns over very rapidly either cold or hot with no hesitation.

Did you find h-d fields for a 2 field starter or go to a 4 field. Where did you get the fields? Ross

The starter is a 2 field coil starter. I got the parts from Ace Alternator & Starter Exchange. Their telephone number is 1-800-843-2211
