This is the basis of a really good idea Charlie.
Substitute playsand bags from Walmart for the live critters, load up the floors, seats and trunk to give the engine a good load and go find some hills to do some accelerating and decelerating. Then return the playsand.

I agree that seating the rings require load. Just running the engine with little or no load will not seat them.
My father saw this many times over the years working for Ford in the tractor business. A farmer would buy a new tractor with money from the fall harvest. Over the winter he would use it to move wagons and other light loads. In the spring when he started plowing or heavy field work it would burn lots of oil and not perform well. Even though it had 50 to 100 hours on it the rings had never seated.
So the solutions were to let him work it hard for a few days to determine if that seated the rings. If that did not work they would pull the intake manifold (it typically was a diesel engine) and let the intake stroke pull about a teaspoon of Bon Ami into each cylinder.
