how can i tell what year engine i have in my 1/2 ton.

Hi -J- Brown-,

Take a look to the left of the distributor at the pad cast into the block. Clean this area and obtain the information stamped into this pad. Just for fun also clean the area just to the right of the distributor and lower down and copy this number that is embossed on the block.

Bring those two pieces of data and post here on the forum. Bet someone will decipher it for you.

I went out and got the # off the engine. It is 09878I8F54Z.

Yes, that is the engine number not the casting number -but-the number indicates that its a 1954 235 engine.What year is your truck??If your truck is a 1953 or earlier that engine will peg your oil pressure gauge at 30 lbs. except at hot idle speed.
