Does the disassembly and reassembly of a 38 passenger gearbox require special service tools that most modern shops do not have? Does any one have a shop to recommend? (I am in eastern Nebraska)I have three used gearboxes and a complete collection of every NOS part needed to completely renew a gearbox.

Its a very simple transmission and no special tools are required. Why don't you try and do it your self. The 1938 Chevrolet shop manual will get you thru 90% of the operations and we can help you with the rest. This would include where to look for wear on parts that will require replacing.
The only thing that you will have to improvise a tool for is removing and replacing the front bearing slinger nut and this should be no problem.

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably wait till spring, since my shop is not heated and it's a bit chilly right now. Since I have the parts to replace everything and will only reuse the cases; I won't need to worry about worn items. The parts are not expensive at all if a person is patient enough to get them only when the price is right. My plans for this 38 coupe is to return it to as new condition throughout. I've done partial restores, fix-as-you-go, and repair just what's needed on old cars before, and decided to try building and driving as new this time. Other than taking a few years to collect the parts and keeping everything well organized, the pleasure of driving a brand new 1938 car will be well worth the effort.
