1939 was the first year for the 228 GMC engine. Was a new engine and the first year a GMC valve in head engine made for GMC was available. It had full pressure oiling and shared only a few minor parts with a 216 Chevrolet engine.
Prior to 1939 GMC smaller trucks used a version of flat head 6 cylinder Pontiac and Oldsmobile engines.
There was a larger 248 enine new for 1939 also.
