The 3/4 tons had a 4.55 rear end. With the large 1 ton truck tires this would be about equal to a 4.11 car. Will check farther and get back tomorrow.

The '63 & '64 3/4 tons used a 4.11 ring gear & pinion and all other internal parts look the same. This is as far as my parts books go.May have been the same after '64 but I can't determine that. After '54 the housing is not the same so just the gears can be used. There again the 4.11 will be a big improvement and with the larger tires should be close to a car with 3.70 and 6.70 X15 tires.

According to what I have read, the rearend internal assemblies on these GMC/Chevy 3/4 and 1 Tons were interchaneable from the early 50s all the way up to 1971. Apparently the ones from 1967 to 1971 trucks with automatic transmissions had the 411 ratio. The swap is illustrated on the site for "OLD GMC TRUCKS" and there is an article on Jim Carter's site. I plan to do this with my 1 Ton.

My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

truckin, Your 1 ton has what is called full floating rear axles. That means is that the axle shaft does not carry any load. The inner part of the shaft is splined to the axle gears in the differential and at the outter end the axle is bolted unto the hub.The axle can be removed and the hub and rear wheel bearings will support the weight of the truck. On passenger cars the wheel is bolted unto the end of the axle (which then supports the car) On the truck the wheel is bolted outo the hub and the hub supports the weight.
