At least you didn't say you were "restoring' it.

Why not just put a new Chevy 2002 Impala rear end in it, then you will be really modern? ( and get good mileage also)
OOPs!
that won't work, I would find any with the right ratio and suspension from a Chevy 1/2 ton. You may get lucky.

Why not go all the way and put the vette rear suspension in it?

That was funny Lil' Johnny. Thanks for the info.
As for suspension could I keep original leafs, remove a few, change mounting bushings. Go with new mounts and springs or four bolt of the vette, but woth these could I still haul something if I had to? Nothing real heavy, couch or washing machine. The truck isn't going to be all chromed out for show, just a very sharp truck to drive around in a few days a week.

I would be careful about removeing any leaves fro the original spring, they were made to be used as a unit, you might find a single leaf spring from a newer truck that would adapt to your truck since you will probably change the rear end assembly, it would be nice if you could use new brakes (self adjusting or even discs)

I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT WHEN I BUILT MY '55 PU (CHEVY), I WENT THRU A LARGE JUNKYARD WITH A TAPE MEASURE AND THE ONE REAR THAT FIT W/O ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS WAS A 1973 F*** MUSTANG 9" (I HAD TO REDO THE PERCHES). THERE ARE A LOT OF "CHUNKS" AROUND FOR THIS REAR AND THEY ARE STRONG. LATER I FOUND A 3.25 POSI CHUNK AND IT WAS EASY TO CHANGE IT OUT. IF YOU WANT TO YOU CAN GET NEW AXLES WITH CHEVY BOLT PATTERNS AND BOLTS. THERE ARE 2 TYPES A 28 AND A 31 SPLINE 9" AXLE,THE 31 IS STRONGER. I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE IS A CADILLAC REAR THAT "BOLTS RIGHT UP" TOO, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT YEAR/MODEL. SOME OF THE STREET ROD WEB SITES CAN HELP YOU ALSO. THE DRIVE SHAFT WAS NO PROBLEM THE DRIVE LINE PEOPLE JUST PUT A F*** UNIT ON ONE END AND A CHEVY UNIT ON THE OTHER END. GATOR cool
