I have a Master and a Standard ”˜36 Sedan and Coupe respectively. The Master generator has a third brush to increase charging at idle speeds, the Standard does not have this functionality. The Standard’s generator does have an internal third brush that is not wired. My question is, can a Standard generator be used in a Master if the generator has the third brush and cutout switch wired for it? And viseversa.

The Standard generator fields are grounded at the generator case. The charging rate is 10 to13 amps.
The Master fields are grounded at the light switch. Turning on the lights or pulling out the light switch knob 1/2 notch will place a load on the generator with the resistor on the light switch and can charge up to 20 amps. That load would fry the Standard gnerator.

Thanks for the info Gene. The reason I asked is, in the 29-54 Chev parts manual it lists the same generator for all cars ”˜29 to ”˜39.

That is a Universal fits all generator. It is actually a 1938-1939 3 brush air cooled generator and can produce up to 28 amps if a current control (voltage reg;.) is used It comes with varoious directions and third brush setting for 1929-1939 cars. I installed one on my 1934 Master. set the brush at 20 AMPS, installed a pulley with the built in fan and it can have a + charge with the radio and lights on. That application retains the original cut-out. If you can find one and don't mind it does not look 100% correct it is a good deal.
