What is the model of the 1954 three speed manual transmission? Listings on Ebay specify kits for Muncie 318 as fitting the 54 and some later three speeds.

the 1954 3 speeds were made in Muncie, Indiana, some in Saginaw, MI, and some in Cleveland,Ohio.
There was never a "name" for them.
The early 4 speeds were Warner and the later light duty ones were SAginaw and heavy duty a Muncie.

Can the shift shaft seals be replaced without removing or disassembling the shifter assembly? Also the repair manual says to pry out the "retainers ". Is the seal and retainer one assembly or two separate parts?

The seals are nothing but cork rings with a metal ring arond. The forks should be removed to get the metal ring out.

Thanks Gene. I was thinking if I could do them from the outside it would save me from damaging the bend over locks inside. It all looks so neat I was hoping not to disturb it.

I took the cover off and everything came out easily except the tin retainers for the cork seals. Has anyone replaced them with modern rubber seals? I found the corks on Ebay but did destroy one retainer.

I wonder if graphite coated string packing for a faucet would make a better seal.

I did locate what I believe are the correct dimension modern seals but was hoping someone that has already done the change would reply. In a worse case scenario as long as the outer diameter is correct I could always remove the rubber lip and install the corks. I do like the cork seal and I think they are better than a single lip rubber. Not much movement in the lever so probably not a concern of damage to the shafts. The string packing would work OK but there is no way to retain it.

I have done that and have ordered seals. Will see how it goes. The dimensions are 7/8x1/2x3/16 .

I asked because I was working with some seals that where cork with the metal ring and not having much luck then found some modern oil seal that where slimmer and double them up and no more leak . I though the seals might be the some size .

The seals I ordered are national # 6120 . The bore or seat for the seal will not take a thicker or doubling up of the seal. The 6120 however has a single sealing lip and a dust lip so should be fine as there is no pressure on them and only some splash oil from fairly heavy oil.

Correction:
: The seal number (6120) is an SKF number not national. I did pick them up today and installed them in the cover and they fit both the cover and shaft fine.
