Has anyone tried to replace this seal/weatherstrip? It looks like I have to remove 4 small screws and 16 nails to remove the sheet metal strip which holds the L shaped rubber seal. I'm thinking that trying to re-nail it could be iffy. I don't know how important this seal is or if it is even effective. The old one is intact but fairly stiff. Could the old seal be softened up?

I needed to soften the rubber(?) "flange" at the bottom of the rear window that retains the package tray in my '59 Chevy.
I don't think the car was ever inside a garage so the rubber was pretty stiff.
I gave it numerous coats of ArmorAll Ultra Shine.......the same stuff I treated the new vinyl roofs I had on a couple Model T's (one of which I still own).
The differences were amazing, especially on the new vinyl which became very soft, supple and fairly shiny after a single wipe down.

I replaced that rubber seal on my 1930 coupe and it was an easy job.

Thanks JD I'll give it a shot. I was concerned about nailing into such a thin piece of wood. I may have to drill new holes to get a fresh grip.

JD the retaining strip came off without damage. I was able to pry it off with a couple thin screw drivers.

Yep, that is exactly what I did. It is easy to do the job once you study the situation.
