I painted the new floor wood with clear urethane, however, I'm wondering what to do with the wood under the car. Do people paint the underneath with black or leave it clear? It seems that I will have to mask it off when painting the body. (1929 coupe)
Thanks

Hello Bare Feet,
I don't know the correct answer so without knowing I think that I would seal the under side floor wood at least and see how it looks. If the look isn't OK, then paint it to match the body color or undercarriage color, whichever you prefer.

Thanks Harry. I imagine it was painted originally. Probably it was black. I was wondering what others have done.

The wood was not originally painted. They used a wood preservative. I have been told it was Copper Arsenate which imparts a greenish tint to the wood.

The wood was not intentionally painted but overspray from the body painting did cover some of it. Most of the exposed surfaces on my 1929 sedan had light layer of body color. Also there were steel pans in the floor that would have had to get some paint as well.

Yep, a wood preservative as Chipper described was used and the wood was not painted. However, when the body of the car was painted at the factory some of the body wood (like the main sills, the door pillars and etc.) had overspray from the body paint.
