First set the octane selector at the base of the distributor to the 0 or center position. Then, with a timing light set the pointer (fole in bell housing) to line up with the ball on the flywheel. Now it is set to run on 65 octane gas. Move octene selector toward advance 4 notches or 8 degrees. Now it will run better on 80 octane gas.
