My car was paint code 74 which has the darker green on the top of the car and rumble lid. It appears there is dark green paint left on some of the metal rails so I am going with that unless it is not correct. My questions are how were the top bows treated. There appears to be a light green wash on some of them but that could have been the bad storage. Also, there is a piece of sheet metal between the chrome hold downs that the windshield top sits in, was this chrome or painted and what color. Thanks

The light green wash is a preservative used to protect the wood from deterioration. The chemical is not available for public use today. Too toxic! The wood bows were covered with a top colored wrapping.

The metal top parts were chrome plated except for the removable sheet metal filler that forms the top of the window frame. All I have seen were painted black. There is also a sheet metal piece that fits into a groove in the front header. It holds a rubber gasket to seal the top of the windshield. Those were also black by my observation.

One of the old timers in the hobby that has done a lot of wood working on car bodies calls the green preservative wash that was applied on the wood at the factory "Coopernal".

I think he's talking about "Cuprinol":

Cuprinol is the trade name for a family of wood preservative products. Several are based on Acypetacs-zinc which generally have a dark or brown color. In the 1930s a Acypetacs-copper which had a green tint was the prime product. The Zinc salt of C8-C10 organic acids is now preferred because it does not tend to bleed into paint top coatings as much as the copper salt. Cuprinols are used as a wood preservative.

End of chemistry lesson for today.

A little embarrassed I could have answered this question on the color of the metal piece that covers the bottom of the front bow. I finally stared restoring these pieces and under the original windshield weather strip was dark green paint that matches the upper body color. Maybe the black was used on black cars and others?

New question - Is this bow supposed to be covered with some sort of heavy cardboard and then the metal piece nailed on? Then the top material? There is a gap between the metal and wood bow.

Thanks

Dave
