I tried a posting in the parts wanted forum without any response yet so thought thought it might be worth trying in this forum also.
Wanted … engine for a 1926 Chevrolet Superior series V car.
Looking for a running engine or one that has been rebuilt or known to be in good condition for rebuild. Would prefer 1926 but 1927 or 1928 will work to get the car back on the road.
I’m just starting on a 1926 touring that is apart and there may be more missing parts, but the engine is my first priority.
Any leads appreciated. Tom

Hi Tom, If you are restoring your car and want to drive it, then it is a good time to rebuild your engine. Are you looking for casting number #345504 or #346715? Good luck, Lou

Headlighter, Casting numbers for '27 & '28 are:
'27= 348709
'28= 348532
Hope this helps. Steve

Hi Lou, I’ve not worked on the early 4 cylinder cars before so am trying to learn more and consider options for the engine. The 1926 car I acquired includes a disassembled engine with parts from different years. The engine needs a lot of work and this is why the previous owner gave up on the car. The block casting is #348532 with a 1928 casting date. The head casting number is 344128 with a 1925 casting date. The crankshaft is not useable due to rust pitting and wear. All babbitt (rods and mains) needs to be replaced. The crankshaft end play is about .030 so I think that means I need to find a new center bearing shell if I use the block. I know anything can be rebuilt, but hope to find an engine that is complete and together with matching casting dates as a starting point. My car is a Superior series V so I think the correct block casting number for it is 345504. I don’t plan on touring - just looking for a reliable engine suitable for local fair-weather driving. Tom

Hi SSG26K Thanks for the info. The car I have is a 1926 Superior V but the engine has been changed and is apart. The block casting I have is number 348532, from a 1928. I would like to find a 26 engine in either running condition or known to be in good condition for rebuild but I'd still consider a complete 1927 or 1928 engine if in good shape.
Tom

I have a possible lead on a 1927 engine. I’m getting a bit confused by trying to figure out applications from my old parts books. Was the same block used in 1926 and 1927?
My Master Parts Price List lists the engine block part number 343993 for both 1926 and 1927 but I've seen different casting numbers (345504 for 1926 and 348709 for 1927). Was there a mid year change in 1927 to the 348709 casting? Is so, what was the change?
Do either of the 1927 engine blocks use a side cover over the push rods or are they both the open style used in 1926?
Thanks for any insight. Tom

Tom, The side covers were on 1928 only. Go to this site to get the explanation on the engines. http://www.hotrod.gregwapling.com/chevrolet/1924-28.pdf

Thanks SSG26K for the link to the engine history. That is very helpful.
From this I understand that both the 345504 and 346709 (which may look like 348709) block castings are correct for a 1926 V series car but the later is much more common since it was used through 1927.
Now I know better what to check as I'm still looking for a good engine. Tom
