My '34 has a leak that disappears when the tank is below half. I suspected the pickup tube as it is about halfway up the front wall. I pulled the tank, filled it with water and sure enough it comes from two spots in the soldering around the pickup tube. What is the preferable way of fixing that?

I would be getting the soldering iron hot, tipping the tank so the contents is away from the joint and resoldering it. Dont use a flame near the tank, with a flame heated iron do that well away from the tank but a electric iron will be fine. You will need a large body iron or high wattage electric.
You may end up completely removing the pipe, thoroughly cleaning and refitting to get it to seal fully.

Thanks Tony. I showed it to the guy who had machined the knees to accept bushings and he says he'll look after it. Looks like he's fixed several before. He says he'll pressure test it too.

Tank is resoldered and back in the car. It has 2-3 gallons of gas and the car has run. Now if it could only stop raining long enough to fill it up.Then we'll know for sure.
