When I took off my old headliner I found under it was an additional liner. Is this common? I noticed that LeBaron Bonney does not include this as part of their Headliner kit. Does that mean this is not necessary? What is the purpose of the liner?

Hi Mike my guess would be to keep condensation from getting to the headliner.

I just completed my headliner replacement in my 41 Master Deluxe. I was fairly certain that the headliner I removed was an untouched original, and I did not have the second "inner" headliner you do, interesting.

Just went through my 2014 pictures to learn more about the installation process for my headliner and found that my headliner DID NOT COME WITH A LINER. I must have taken the white headliner off of another car or it eas given to me. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

The first picture clearly shows rodent damage and the tar based sound deadener on my roof. The second picture shows the remnants of rodent waste and the reason to wear a mask when doing interior upholstery work. The last picture shows the wire harness damage concealed under my headliner, and why old wire harnesses should be replaced.

Always good to have pictures...

Your "extra lining" has had me wondering if condensation was ever an issue with these headliners staining. Not much of an issue as a summer car but I could imagine it would have been nasty as a daily driver over the winter.

Also not a bad idea for sound proofing if the inner liner had some density.
