Does anyone know of a source for paint for an 89 Caprice? Can not get lacquer paint around here anywhere and none of the auto body web sites have been productive when I asked there. If lacquer is not available, how would touch up be accomplished without painting the whole car? Does anyone know how difficult it is to remove the padded vinyl roof from an LS Brougham so rust underneath can be treated?

Try Auto color Library, they should have it.

Monte, am I mistaken to say that GM stopped using lacquer after the 85 models? Shouldn't the paint on the 89 be acrylic? manwre

That may the case and I've never tried to spot in Acrylic Enamel with Lacquer but it might work. I know that on fresh paint it will wrinkle. I would recommend though that if it is painted with Acrylic Enamel that you use that instead of Lacquer. The Color Library will have that also usually in a couple of different brands.

GM used lacquer on many auto & truck lines through the early 90's. Others with more paint experience can chime in, but I believe the Caprice didn't get BC/CC until 91.

I'm fairly certain you can touch-up your OEM lacquer with enamel or urethane without a problem. Its when you use lacquer on enamel when you get wrinkling and adhesion issues due to the solvents in lacquer.

If you'd like to get the code to shop for touch-up paint, you can find it on the RPO code sticker located in your trunk.

Not to discourage the do-it-yourself nature of this group, but if you have nice original paint and just need some color blown onto some spots or a panel here & there, I'd let the pros deal with it. Any good body shop should be able to get your Caprice back to where you'd like it and keep the rust away. Hope this helps. I'm sure that's a nice driving car!

How bad do you think the rust under the top is?

The type of paint will be listed on the Service Parts information sticker.
This is a white sheet listing all options, etc.
In 1989 it was usually glued to the inner trunk panel but could be in other locations.
If if says, for example "BC,CC" it will be base coat/clear coat.
Sometimmes it even depends at what plant the car was assembled. Some had water base etc.

Guys,
The Caprice wagons did not go to a 2 stage bc/cc until the resign 1991models came out.

Steve you're right most Chevy's went to a bc/cc in 1985.....but not the Caprice wagons.

The SPID label of my 89 2 tone Caprice wagon specifically says lacquer paint at the bottom of it.

That said,I do not know where the average Chevy enthusiast can purchase a true single stage lacquer.Or single good old acrylic enamels either. Jim

Monte3 when you say "touch up" do you mean out of a small bottle/brush? Or touch up with a spray gun?

If with brush/bottle/spray can I've had fantastic results touching up single stage lacquer with any quality single stage enamel.I order touch up from Tower Paint in Oshkosh Wisc. Their website is www.apstowerpaint.com I would contact them and ask them if they sell lacquer in spray can form.I've ordered their enamel in spray cans and touch up bottles from them, and have always been pleased with their paints.

You can always paint enamel over lacquer, but not lacquer over enamel.

Hope this helps,Jim

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Life gets in the way and the car is stored in an inconvenient location so I haven't been able to check the truck for the label. In response to one question, the paint has flaked off the drivers door in large hunks. It will have to be sanded down and then painted below the side molding with a spray gun. I have done this before once or twice and I am confidant that I can make it look good again if I get a good paint match. Thanks for all the input.

Hibernia Auto Restoration in NJ (973) 627-1882 still mixes lacquer paint by the gallon and they ship. It is a little pricey! They are mixing a gallon for me now for my 60 Impala, and shipping it to Florida. They are sending me a "sprayout" sample to assure the color is a good match. The first sample was off so I sent them a valance to match the color to, taking a little too long but seem to be concerned with getting it right
I have a similar problem I need to shoot just a fender and a door I had a big oops while putting it in the trailer and the car wears most of the original paint, so I just want to paint the damaged area.

If it is a truck it is finished in enamel rather than some kind of lacquer. Go to a professional auto paint store.

Gene, I guess you missed the first post. Are you saying Hibernia is not a professional paint shop?

From the lacquer they mixed for me I would never recommend them.
They said they could duplicate the original light gray for my '50. What they sent was miles off.

Did you send them a part to match the color with? Did they send you a spray out prior to the final mix? I requested a sprayout prior to the mix. The color was off on the first spray out so I sent one of my valances to them for a match. I did expect to have to send them a part of the car, problem is with the 1960 there are no small parts to remove. I would expect the same problem with anyone else just going off the formula, they are all useing the same formula and there is just too many factors, such as exposure to UV compunding and waxing, and who knows how close the color was to the original when the car was produced. If they have a part of the car there is no excuse for it not to match. The three original color chart the chips on the charts don't even match each other or even the car. They are all from three different suppliers, DuPont, RM, and PPG, and also the original Chevrolet Brochure, they are not close to each other let alone the car. They are only mixing it off the "original formula" listed in the book. We will see how it goes. I am up north for a few weeks and they are only about 50 miles away in NJ from me so my plan is to take a drive out there to motivate them, and maybe see the visual for myself

Two years too late, sorry.I did read all of the posts after I posed the question. I ended up going with English Color out of Texas. They mixed me up a quart of lacquer that was a perfect match. There were issues with wrinkling of the color coat and the professional paint man I consulted assured me that it was because the original paint was sucking solvent from the newly sprayed paint and the only way to fix it was to spray the whole panel. Anyway, she went to the Southeast Meet in Charleston and the Central Meet near Toledo last summer. Now if I could find the right pinstripe. A near miss is available that I can live with, but it would be nice to have the exact shade.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. They were helpful
